« on: March 15, 2006, 08:58:26 pm »

I can't stand it any longer. i need help. Im sat in front of the comp running 10.4 and under dictionary preferences this is what i see: the New Oxford American Dictionary, and the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus.

For gods sake im not a Yank, I would like to spell things correctly please. Does anyone know where for the love of god i can download a english / international english dictionary that i can run instead?

Thanks.

edit: on reading that though it sounds like a mad crazy man's managed to post on my account... but lemme explain. The english language does not replace all instances of the letter C or S with the letter Z. Colour is spelt just like that with a bloody U. I can't stand having to manually correct the computer for proper english rather than some half arsed stupid attempt at english for people who can't .... im ranting again arn't i Sad

You guys are just upset because we Americans PERFECTED the English language which you managed to really screw up over the last few thousand years.  And you wonder why we wanted to toss your tea overboard, tar and feather your soldiers, and tell your bloody King to kiss off.   Wink

sheesh.

I know that the word is spelled ("spelt" for you, is it?) "color" in Latin.  It's you friggin' Englishmen who changed it!  =P

So it's American Latin now?

Anyhoo, I'm missing the plug-in for OS X on that site Shade. Maybe cause it's 2:44 AM and I'm tired. On a related side note, grammarian [the app] adds grammar check to OSX... through a menu... no live-type.

Colour is spelled with a U, its not supposed to be spelled color. Everytime I am typing an email and use the word colour, it keeps prompting me that its spelled wrong, and I keep saying to myself, this is driving me bananas.

Just like many Americas who say the letter Z, is pronounced Zeee.  Well, its not, its pronounced Zed.  Just like when I was part of KoS clan.  I would hear people on GR voice chatting in rooms saying KoS pronounced "kowssss", where it should be, "Kawsss".

Hey, now.  Language is an invented construct — it's not something to be sententious about.  What's wrong with you pronouncing it 'zed', me pronouncing it 'zee', and Carlos pronouncing it 'zeta'?

You aren't 'right'.  You're the Laser Lemon in the box of Crayola.

Its not a big deal, I could care less if you say potAtoe or potawtoe.  Simply b/c I know what yer trying to say and that's sufficient as far as I'm concerned.  Its when others say this is wrong and thats right, meanwhile, other peeps in here (which I have seen on more than one occasion) saying that my way of pronouncing it is incorrect.

Oh, I always thought the way we did it in the United States was "right" while the way you do it in every other country is simply "wrong".[/size]   Wink

WOAH WOAH FOLKS!!

Look i don't mind how you want to pronounce words - potatoe potarrtoe patatoeee hell its still a lil thing that tastes nice and makes chips! Wink

All i want is for the spell checker to correct my appauling spellings using 'correct' english and not the American style which over here is basically just looked apon as bad incorrect spelling. What frustrates me is that Apple seem to have decided that if your English or want to operate your System in english, you have to use American slang/spelling.

ps, sorry shiex a joke in bad taste Sad
