I'm getting ready to sell my 17" PowerBook...not sure what I'm going to replace it with yet, but I thought I'd get out of it while it's still worth something.  Anyhow, I can't figure out how to completely erase the Home Account with my name (Erich) without having to do a complete reinstall of OSX.  Any ideas?  I've tried deleting everything including the User Account Folder and it still pops back in there when I restart the computer.

I'm running OSX 10.4.4, if that matters.

can't you just create another user, but giving full access to the second account, log into new account, then remove your old one....

It's not possible to delete the root/admin user because of several reasons... and why do you want to keep the system on anyway? If you want to sell it I'd recommend doing a secure erase of the complete HD (via another Mac) with the Disk Utility and even overwrite it with zeros (for your own sake). After that's done you can reinstall the system it came with until the point where you have to fill out stuff... then you simply turn it off. Next time the Mac gets started it'll be in the same state as when you started it the very first time (intro movie, etc). Whoever bought it can then fill in his informations and update to the most recent version of the OS himself.

The reason I don't want to erase the hard drive is because I promised to leave some of the software on it so the new buyer could "try it out" and then delete it at their discretion.  So, no way to delete the root account?

No, it's also not legal to do this 'I'll leave it on so you can try it out and it's your responsibility to delete it afterwards' thing anymore (I assume you're eBaying it as usual). You'd also give away your SNs/registrations (if you delete them, the applications will be useless anyway), unless it's shareware. Pretty much everything is saved in the root user installation...

Well, can you at least change the short name of the root account?

not so sure, im sure if you know what your doing in terminal then its possible... but unless you really really know what your doing, definatly not advisable to attempt it.

... might be wrong though but just about everything can be tampered with through terminal Smiley
