You should watch the cast from "The Birdcage", and in particular Robin Williams. For instance:

aaaaah yes the birdcage... anyone else seen the original though?

I have seen it. And in French, bien entendu.    While I obviously prefer the 1996 remake, nonetheless I would recommend watching the original, which is entitled "La Cage Aux Folles". This film is definitely not as overwhelming as its follow-up, rather it is guarded, middle-of-the-road, bourgeois. The actors behave in an excessively "conservative" fashion too, as if trying really hard not to sound too funny, even though "La Cage Aux Folles" is, in the first place, a comedy. Also, it could have done with a bit more music. That's a golden movie-making rule, if you ask me. If you decide to watch it, you will learn to appreciate the sequel more. 

An honest 1970s comedy—it was, after all, a box-office hit across the West—, but, put simply, not up to the challenge of today's more "grotesque" tendencies.
