So, I went to see it on opening night. Out of the 20 people I went to see it with, I was the only one who thought it was a well made movie. Anyone else see it? What were your thoughts?

i thought the movie was pretty rad.
i saw it last night and really liked the seriousness with the small parts of funnyness built in.
overall a very good movie, worth the 10 bucks you have to pay now a days to see it.

Despite a steady rise in the number of members in GR's database, the GameRanger community is dying. The number of games played is equal to that of about three years ago, at about 7000 games/day. I believe this has occured for two reasons, both of which can be gleaned from some knowledge of the current games and by browsing GR's game list.
1) The number of games coming out with GameRanger support is going down drastically, and the big name titles (like CoD, BF1942 and AA in particular), have their own MP servers built in, allowing players to just game and not deal with the potential hassle (or benefit) of having a tight knit gaming community such as we have. Also it allows players to connect with PC players and give them a much wider base of people to kill.
2) The number of games that GameRanger support are largely OS 9 only, with no hopes of them ever being carbonized, like RS, Total Annihilation, UT 99, and Warcraft 2. Well, I dont hear anybody clamoring for MP games of Warcraft 2 anymore (not that I ever did in the first place), but I was so surprised to see it on the list I thought I should mention it.
Not to be a pessimist, but I dont see any mac gaming savior on the horizon that will have an exclusively Mac community (IE, major support by gamers by playing it on GR).
Anyway, sorry to sidetrack the thread.
Despite the so-so reviews of Jarhead I intend to see it when I get some spare time.

Perhaps somebody can start another thread to discuss the issue of GameRanger, etc. Until then keep it on topic folks
Anyway, I went to go see Jarhead the other night and I felt sort of let down. The cinematography was amazing; the burning oil field scenes were stunning and there were some moments where I felt my heart nearly skip a beat it was so overwhelming.
Honestly, that's about the only thing I felt the movie had going for it. The characters were undeveloped, nobody was particularly likeable, or seemed to have any real story to them. The issues the film deals with, like disillusionment, disappointment, and the loss of one's livelihood are all presented- then left unaddressed. There are questions, open-ended scenes where you find yourself asking what the hell just happened (for example, how did Swoff's sight die?) and the ending, my god the ending... it was abrupt and ambiguous, like you just watched the whole thing just to hear Jake Gyllenhaal say something painfully cliche and obvious that every war film deals with. Every ex-soldier deals with the fact that his life is different and perhaps pretty ordinary compared to what he experienced wherever, what makes this unique? Nothing, except it might be just a smidge less exciting.
Granted, there were a few poignant aspects of the film I enjoyed. I liked the fact that it gave the audience a little insight into the life of a Desert Storm soldier, and let us step into their shoes. It also wasn't overly sentimental or glorifying, which was pleasant and unexpected from a Hollywood film.
Anyway, that's my spiel. It was an okay movie.

i saw it tonight....and thought it was terrible. there is NO action in this movie, what so ever.....the only person that i can think of that even dies is some dude in training camp. The movie goes on like there's gonna be some major action...but there's NONE at all... 0 out of 5 imo.

No action... so what? u make it sound like it has to have people dying in it to make it a good movie?

Twist, do u know much about the Gulf War? I've studied it and have uncles who fought in it and to make this short, the way consisted of no action for the ground troops. This is why most of the people who fought in the war were so angry because they trained for over 2 years not to fire a single shot. I thought the movie was good because it portraited Desert Storm exactly how it was in real life, no hollywood bullshit. If you went into the movie theater expecting Black Hawk Down then sure I guess you were dissapointed, but if you know anything about the war then it will make the movie better due to its realism.

when i saw the preview, i was thinking there was going to be more than 10 minutes of action, which is what the trailer portrays it to be...i was hoping for something like Black Hawk Down, because that movie was badass....thats why i was so disappointed.
It was nothing but a tease to me...it kept building up...building up....then we saw the credits.

Exactly twist, I think what they were attempting to do was make the audiance feel exactly how the soldiers in the Gulf War felt. They trained and were teased with the ideas of war and then the war was over. Just like the movie.

i don't think it sucked. you don't necessarily need to see people blow up to like a movie, or am i missing something ?

I didn't say it sucks, I didn't even see the movie yet, just how Rebel formulated it sounded like they made it
suck
intentionally.
