Nope, Americans just don't like driving sissy cars. Over here, bigger is better!

Well, let's take the F-250 diesel I'm driving right now...
It's about 7,000 pounds and is huge...will seat 6 adults with plenty of room to spare. Can tow 17,000 lbs and can hold 5,000 lbs of payload in the bed. It can do pretty much anything you need it to do. While at the same time, it gets 25 mpg on the highway (doesn't sound like a lot compared to a compact car, but remember, this thing is twice as long as many cars), and at the same time it meets pollution laws in all 50 states (including California, which is pretty strict on pollution).
Point being, they make these vehicles better and better, year after year, so you can still have a nice big vehicle capable of hauling around your boat or camper (two things very popular in this country) while not killing the environment or using too much fuel.

I'm thinking of trading in my wife's Ford Windstar minivan for a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid. They are great little SUV's.

6 seats eh?, how many times in one year do you fill those 6 seats?
i only have 5, and mine has only been full twice already this year
25mpg is so poor, you are probably lucky gas is so cheap over there, per gallon our petrol is close to £5, so till fill my tank would be around £40-50, ok at the same time, i get more mpg's, probably about 45-50. i think that was this whole thread was about... how expensive it is.
but hey, if you can afford it, i would have an attitude like that.
I take it GS, your insurance is paid for, probably most of your gas bills and the car is actually from the garage you work for?

Quite often, actually. Although my house only consists of me, my wife, and my 6-year-old daughter, we regulary take other family members out to dinner. We seat 5 at least twice a week, and seat all 6 probably several times a month.

25mpg is really good for a vehicle that size. On the other hand, my wife's Windstar van gets closer to 30 mpg (and can seat 7 adults comfortably). I also own a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup that gets close to 28 mpg and of course my 2005 Saleen Mustang which has a 415 hp V-8 and still manages 25 mpg on the highway. I'm probably going to trade the Windstar in for a 2006 Escape Hybrid later this year. It gets about 40 mpg in the city, and around 35 mpg on the highway (better in the city because it turns off the gas engine more).

Yes, the 2006 F-250 diesel is my company demo, I get another new one each 8,000 miles I drive (usually takes me 2 to 3 months to drive that). Insurance, gas, tax, tag, maintenance, etc. is all paid for by the dealership I work for. That saves me about $60,000 a year if you figure in the price of the truck (even though I go through 4 trucks a year). Now, besides that, I do own the 2000 Ford Windstar SEL, 2002 Ford Ranger XLT, and 2005 Saleen Mustang. I have to pay insurance, gas, tax, etc on all of those.

GS you've probably heard this before, but I'll say it again: you have too many cars!
You just need to keep this one

You work for a Ford Dealership GS? I'm an intern at JWT Detroit and am in the RAF department, so I get to deal with everything Ford. Hopefully you'll see my 06 Explorer POP which supposedly goes to the dealerships.
Go figure I basically work for Ford but I drive an Acura:
2003 Acura CL Type-S, MT. The only thing I've done to it was buy some Yokohama Avids, the car handles so much better now. Oh, and I'll never go automatic again.

it's not impossible...i'm going to have to assume you don't know anything about forced induction. albeit i needed a brand new intercooler.
i'll explain better just so i don't have to repost. i know it's a touchy subject, but it has been done many times and i'm good friends with a mustang expert so he did all the installation. 9000$ later i had brand new internals, new fuel injection, manifolds, and to make the TT/SC work together you redo the bypass for the blower and a bypass for the turbocharger. the supercharger is liquid cooled, so it doesn't get heated up again when it comes through.
Engine>turbo>intercooler>super
in the end it was pretty impractical because it detracted from my top end, but the accel is like getting punched in the chest. plus i know i can at least break even on the car now since it only cost 1500$ to start with
Bronto hoe, my brother doesn't know how that's possible. He doesn't understand where all that could possibly fit. Can you take a picture of your engine?

Ooh, I want a Toyota hybrid car. From what I hear, it's by leaps and bounds the best hybrid system out there, I just have to wait on an attractive option (4Runner anyone!?!)

the supercoupe already has the supercharger fit snugly in there, the guy who did installation said he did the best he could to make room (i wasn't there for that phase so i don't know exactly what he did), but i have a big ol cal hood on there now. i don't have a digi cam, i'll get a disposable and get em developed soon.

I understood the part of having a Thunderbird SC and adding a turbo and intercooler (even though it doesn't make much sense to do it)...what I thought was impossible was adding a twin turbo setup to your supercharged 3.8L V-6. I asked the guys in the dealership who work on them, plus I sell these things, you know.

yeah it's possible, it took time and money though. everything down to the exaust had to be worked on, i could probably just change the name of the car now. it wasn't all for nothing though, you'd have to drive it to understand why i did it. i'm probably going to end up parting it out and getting an old muscle car to work on within the next year or so.
here's a 4 cylinder with the same combo:
http://gamma.nic.fi/~globe/rally/paradise/stat/car_b_delta.htm
i think they banned it though lol.

your totally right bronto, they banned those group B rally cars in 86, cos they were too fast. henri toivonen used to drive one and killed himself on (i think) the monte carlo. i went to a couple of those rallys back in the 80's (when i was a kid i hasten to add). ill post a photo if i can dig it out. check out the peugeot 205 T16's too
