What is a better buy for a new college student for computers?
«

I've been wondering... After the WWDC I promised myself that if they introduced the PB G5, I would buy that, but that didn't happen, so I decided on an iMac G5... But I'm not quite sure if it's the best buy for it... I made a chart and compared the iMac G5, iBook G4, and the PowerBook G4. Here's what I got:
So, as you can see, I found the iMac to be a better buy, in my opinion, because it was cheap (I'm not wanting to spend over 1,300 for a computer). So I want to know if anyone can prove me wrong with a better deal on a different computer.

check to see if your college offers deal through apple on computers. My GF is a student at UCLA and through her i was able to get a 20" 1.8ghz iMac with 1GB of RAM, superdrive and wireless KB and mouse for 999.
What college will you be attending?

Better rid that picture from your sig, Blitz. Not allowed around here.
I'd go with the iMac, man. Who the hell wants to look at a foot of screen real estate? I highly doubt you will be looking at porn in class that much. Plus, you'll finally be able to get back into gaming. And we can teabag you again.

Um, based on specs only, of course the iMac is going to look better, but the whole point of a laptop is that it gives you mobility, and that counts for a LOT in college, in my opinion. My solution:
For college, I'm going to be keeping my G5 tower in my dorm, but I'm getting an older iBook (If it can run the following four programs, I'm all set: Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Appleworks).

Snipe, Civic had an old iBook going for $51.00 the other day. I imagine that rose to over 100, but it was shown with Tiger and everything.

Hey Blitz, please remove the picture from your signature. This forum doesn't allow pictures in your signature.
Thanks,
-GhostSniper, your friendly neighborhood moderator, out.
P.S. I would go for the iMac G5, but that's just me.

No, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Get the damn laptop. It's so much easier for writing papers when your room mate is obnoxious, taking better notes in class, or playing snood in class.

the iBook SE is at $425 now, 1 day and some hours to go. and Tiger is only installed, not included, as mentioned in the description.

Um Blitz isn't what you need the computer
for
more relevant? the decision which is best to buy depends entirely on what your needs are.

iBook cheap so you can replace it in the future with less loss on a obsolete PPC mac.

wtf? Civic, you're like ripping someone off. A brand new iBook costs 999. If you can find a student with their discount it's probably like 799.

it has collector's value, especially because it's a Special Edition, the first iBook with a built-in DVD-Drive, FireWire and A/V-Output. it also has a later added Airport Card. these usually go for around 500 bucks on eBay, as far as i've observed similar auctions.

Okay, I know people are stupid on ebay and will pay stupid money for stuff...but PLEASE stop saying that your iBook has "Collector's Value". I'm sorry, but I AM A COLLECTOR. It has NO collector's value. I own some of the most valuable macs ever made, including on original, unmodified 128k mac that is in perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition in the original mint box. It doesn't get any better than that when it comes to collector's macs. The 20th Anniversary Mac is another example. Even the very very first release of the original Bondi Blue iMac is a collector's item...or the very first edition of the iBook. But a middle-generation iBook...no way dude. I AM a collector, and I wouldn't pay $100 for it.
Like I said though...I'm glad someone else is willing to fork out the coin for it. It will be a great deal on your end.

pff, yours simply have MORE collector's value... you collector you, you simply bought them when they got released and didn't buy 'em years later, as a
real
collector would do who's looking for an old modell.

GS, you should like add on a room to your house and put every Mac ever made in it. Then again your priorites are probably different, but it would be fun to look at.

I think a Bluedalmatian iMac G3 has collectors value, and would pay that value in a heartbeat to have that RS playing machine... mmm blue.
