They wont go to war, and if they get close to it the US will stop them.

Japan and the US have a whole bunch of trade both commercialy and culturaly.

China pays the United States's government's debt and in reponse garner a highly favourable trading status  with the US and other very nice deals. One dosen't go to war if there is not something to gain, and in this scenario there is everything to lose (for both sides).

Japan has no armed forces, the only tools of war that are in japan are american. If China and Japan go to war, the US has no choice but to get involved since they have quite a few bases in japan.

Kuza, Japan has one of the world's most modern armed forces. They are equipt with American craft, some of which they self produce under license. Technologically speaking they are a serious foe, quite likely on par with American forces. It's doubtful that China would find them a push over (aside from nuking the Japanese).

"Japan's prime minister apologized Friday for his country's World War II aggression in Asia in a bid to defuse tensions with regional rival China, but a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the apology needed to be backed up with action after Japanese lawmakers made a controversial visit to a war shrine."

An apology for WWII agression?  I think China deserves more than just an apology.
