Johnny Carson, 30-year host of the Tonight Show, died today, January 23, 2005.

Here is the military tribute I made for him that I updated today:

I'm sure he was a hell of a Lieutenant as well. It is a shame.

No offense ment towards Mr. Johnny Carson, but don't you think using the phrase "war veteran" in the context of the cold war is stretching the concept pretty far?

Anyway, atleast he died of old age, RIP.

Edit. Ohwait, it just says "veteran of" but still.. .  Roll Eyes

He was also a veteran of World War II, not just the Cold War.  And we did lose a lot of people in "friendly" accidents during the Cold War (such as times when the USSR and China shot down our aircraft...oh, and who do you think supplied the North Koreans with arms against us during the Korean War...and supplied the North Vietnamese with arms against us during the Vietnam War?  All were Cold War actions).  I am also a veteran of the Cold War, by the way.

I probably should have paid more attention at classes then, I just think of it as general tensions between USA and the USSR, from the end of WW2 to the fall of the USSR.

But I still don't think you can be a "veteran" in military terms unless you have been in combat, albeit Johnny Carson was one since he served in WW2.

To sum it up, if you served in WW2 you're a veteran. If you served in Vietnam, you're a veteran. If you served in Korea you're a veteran. If you were in the army within a time interval of 50-some years.. . I personally don't think you're a veteran. (not to say you're not a veteran GS, since we all know you served in Bosnia  Wink )

Don't worry Joka, I knew what you meant...I was just trying to clarify it for you.  Also, anyone who served in the military at all, in peace-time, or war-time, is considered a "Veteran" by the government of the United States...and all are entitled to the same benifits such as Veteran's Administration Benifits, VA Housing Loans, the GI Bill to pay for college, etc.

But you are right about one thing...Cold War veterans are not generally considered to be "war veterans".
