Many of the 10 000 RPM drives are upwards of $2.35 per GB vs a 7 200 RPM drive usually under $1 per GB. The question is, is there a true link between Hard drive RPM and increases in speed --> Specifically in Gaming.

Is there a true connection or is just BS?

If it were up to me when buying a hard drive, I would buy the fastest available.  A 10k rpm drive is going to give you a speed increase in anything that accesses the hard drive for information.  Have you ever played a game on a laptop with a 5400 rpm drive and then played the same game on a desktop system with the exact same specs but with a regular 7200 rpm drive?  Big difference.  Seems like disk access takes forever.

It is a little pricey...but you get what you pay for.

But if I need extra space but want, should I buy a second 7200 RPM drive with say 200GB over a 74GB 10000 RPM drive? Perhaps hold out until price on the HDs drops and then buy a higher RPM?

Well, a good rule of thumb is to buy as much space as you can afford.  If that means sticking with a 7200 rpm drive, then that is what you should do.  Personally, I would buy the fastest, but I have money to burn.

Unfortunately 74GB is the highest Serial ATA 10000 RPM drive I could find... And this isn't my money... just say a wish list.

I play games on a laptop with a 4200RPM drive and notice no difference between that and the 7200 RPM drives on my desktops.

Really?  Is your laptop and desktop the exact same specs?  Same processor, same processor speed, same RAM, same graphics card, etc?  Just asking, because when I had my iBook I had the exact same specs as my desktop and the iBook just seemed slower....and seemed to take longer to access the hard drive.  Maybe it's just me.  Now, I'm basing that more off of just doing general work like with Photoshop...I didn't play too many games on them.[/size]

That is why you set a book under your laptop when you have it on your lap. Otherwise the powerbook WILL burn your balls off.

a faster harddrive would certainly accelerate load times, where they are connected to the HD speed. but I don't think that you would see a major improvement if you buy a 10k drive over a 7.5k drive, except if you do some heavy photoshopping. PS very much depends on a fast harddrive.
