Multiplayer, Internet, Add Server (furthest button on the right side)  then you can enter the IP.  I believe thats it, i havnt played BF1942 in a while.  Ill go check and make sure im right.

Yeah, just MP/Internet/Add Server.  That might not be the fastest way to do it, but it works =P

I haven't played the game in a while either, but wouldn't the ~ to open console and then type a command to connect via IP?  Like in CoD, you click ~ to open console and then type /connect + IP, try that.
