This runs along the same line as the previous post about headsets but basically all i need is a good set of gaming speakers. I don't need/want 5.1 surround sound i just want 2 speakers and a subwoofer.

Monsoon Speakers own any competition out there. Nothing beats satellite speakers. Just set them up right.

Monsoons range from 79-200+ canadian dollars, I don't know what they cost in yankee land.

Nomad this is worse than your Airport Advice. 5 speaker systems almost always suck. Satellite use a directional style of sound so they give the effect of complete surround sound without wasting money. Plus they sound 20x better. Ask anyone who has owned a pair of monsoons vs their old more than 2:1 system.

1) I suppose 5 pc speaker "can" suck, but not almost always and I just never heard of monsoon speakers b4, so I can't comment on those. But, if those speakers give the effect of complete surround sound, how can it be 20x better?
2) My airport advice was sound through and through, there was nothing flawed about it

Well, if you have a G5 any surround sound system with built-in fiber audio input works great. I have a Sony SRS and it sounds great.
If not the logitech speakers are great.

I've got a set of Logitech Z-640's, and while they're a 5.1 system, you'll find that the extra two satellites and center really help with sound quality. More speaker surface area=more sound. Thes can be had in store for about $50-80.
If you're really looking for a good sounding 2/.1 system, I'd just buy a decent bookshelf system with a line in. You'll get much better sound than you ever will with a set of computer speakers, mainly because you just have more surface area. As an additional bonus, you get a full fledged stereo for your room. I used to have a little executive Panasonic bi-amped model that I hooked a pair of Sony floorstanders with 6.5 inch mains into the bass output, and then the lil panasonic speakers into the high/mid out. Sounded like a dream, but that exact setup will cost you about $300 new,you could probobly find similar sounding parts for lots less.
If you have a system like that, just get a 1/8th inch headphone to stereo RCA cable and plug your comp into that. It'll take up a bit more room, but sound grand. You'll actually have midrange and midbass, two things that are essential if you listen to rock. These can be had at nearly any electronics store (circuit city, best buy, radio shack) for about $5-10.
Just to brag about my current setup, my room's computer is a PC (gasp, hush, better sound support), it has a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS in it, and it's wired via three of the above mentioned cables to my 6-channel discreet input on my 500-watt RCA reciever (can't find pic-just picturea monster black box with lotsa knobs and buttons) with every type of decoding known to man, to which is hooked a JBL SCS150SI (
http://www.leesvideo.com/fotos/SCS150SI.jpg
) speaker pack. For a sense of scale, that sub is about 16 inches on a side. Actual retail price: $800. Price paid: $170. Yes there is a God, and yes he smiles upon me. This serves me well as my PC is my stereo/tv/dvd/game/everything source for my room.
If you go the home theater route, remember that it's an investment: you can make you TV/stereo/everything run through it, so it may not be a bad idea to invest in a nice reciever and a decent pair of speakers, then add more as you desire.
But if you just want some 2.1 comp speakers, you really can't go wrong if you buy form Logitech, Klipsh, or Creative. If you go for the z-340's, I highly recommend upgrading to the 640's and just setting the rears as extra fronts or finding a spot to put 'em. For $50 you can't go wrong.

The z-640's are fantastic for the price. I have a set of these on my G4 tower and love them. Teamed up with the m-audio Revolution sound card is an awsome combo. Almost like being in a movie theatre. So for under $200.00 you have a very nice SRS system. The SRS helps alot in games that support it.

The only real downside to the Z-640's is if you don't have a 5.1 or better soundcard, you're gonna need a headphone Y-splitter to get sound out of the rears ($5 at any electronics store). But even with that figured into the price they sound fantastic. You'll be pleasantly surprised how much bass the sub puts out for its size, it can easily be heard accross a moderately sized house. Watch the ads, most stores seem to just rotate which speakers they put on sale, and when these come on they're only about $50.
Since I've moved on to bigger and better speakers, I've set these up at my friends house in his room, and he uses them purely for music. We hung one satellite as close as possible ot each corner in his room, put the center channel with the volume/fade levels on his nightstand, and hid the sub away under his bed. We had to buy a pair of RCA speaker with extenders to get the rears as far back as we wanted, but they're only $3 a piece for 20ft., not a real major cost. I find that while 2.1 systems sound great, nothing beats room filling sound comming frm all directions. So if you can spot a relatively flat surface or possible hanging location towards each corner, I say buy 'em.
Myst, I know you love your monsoons, but if he's gonna be listening to music from his iPod, they're far to directional, as they'll give him one very small sweet spot that he'll hafta sit in to get good sound.
