Sources close to Think Secret have provided a look at the upcoming iMac G5 (previously rumored) in both 17" and 20" configurations.

The soon-to-be-announced, re-designed iMac will be available in two 17-inch models with a 1.6GHz G5 processor and two 20-inch models with a 1.8GHz G5 processor, reliable sources have told Think Secret. In addition, the new models will be housed in an all-in-one body with the motherboard and components attached to the back of the display.

Pricing is expected to be in the $1300 - $2200 range, but higher prices haven't been ruled out.

Starting with an education-aimed model lacking any optical drives presumably to replace the current eMac, the low end machine should sport:
- Single 1.6 GHz G5 Processor
- 17" widescreen display
- 40GB Ultra ATA hard drive
- 256MB of DDR SDRAM
- 512K L2 cache
- NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics processor with 32MB of DDR video memory
- VGA video output, S-video and composite video output
- 10/100BASE-T Ethernet
- two FireWire 400 ports
- three USB 2.0 ports
- two USB 1.1 ports on the keyboard.

The first consumer-level iMac should have the following additions to the base education model:
- Single 1.6 GHz G5 Processor
- 17" widescreen display
- slot-loading Combo drive
- 80GB Serial ATA hard drive
- NVIDIA GeForce MX 5200 Ultra graphics processor with 64MB of DDR video memory
- 56K internal modem

As a step up, the high-end consumer-level iMac should be equipped with:
- Single 1.8GHz G5 processor
- 20" widescreen TFT display
- slot-loading SuperDrive
- 80GB Serial ATA hard drive
- optional 160GB Serial ATA hard drive
- NVIDIA GeForce MX 5200 Ultra graphics processor with 64MB of DDR video memory
- 256MB of DDR SDRAM
- All other features will be the same as the 17-inch models.

All models should include stereo speakers in the enclosure, and should support up to 2 GB DDR memory, airport extreme, standard Apple software package, and a wired mouse and keyboard. Additionally, all models should have optical audio-out like the G5 Power Macs.

The new models are expected to be introduced August 31st during the keynote address at Apple Expo Paris.

bah, way to little RAM in my opinion, should be at least 512mb... and they should definitely make a better graphic card optional, at least the 128mb one. with the current specs... very bad for gaming (no, i know that iMacs/eMacs were never really good respectively for gaming, heh Wink).

also, i heard things about that the hardware is going to be behind the screen... i'm very excited how the design of the new G5 iMacs will be like. Smiley[/color]

THIS looks sweet! but i think it's, as usual, made by some graphic designer... for fun. Smiley

i love the miniCUBE design... and especially the absolutely cute mini 30" screen!

looks really nice!

Brings back visions of the 20 anav. macs..... on secont thought....... The mini cub design your be better (at least that would make it easier to upgrade stuff then a behind the screen design.

That price range makes no sense, even for apple. Why would you pay for a single 1.8 over a dual 1.8 in a tower? If they did this I think I'll take back my invest in Apple comments.

And there is no optical drive on the lowest end? They are just kidding right?

Did you read the post?

Thats the education model. Education want cheaper computers and they don't all need an optical drive.

Its weird but thats what they want. Also this model won't be available to the public I would think.

I expect that 20" monitor that comes as part of the iMac has something to do with it.

actually... it'd be a pretty cool idea by Apple if they'd bring the Cube back with somehow "merging" it with the iMac. maybe even with some lil upgrading possibilities also...

let's call it the iCube!

new news by Think Secret! Smiley

Sources told Think Secret that the new iMac design is "impressive" and "an eye catcher." The new unit will not have a display with adjustable neck as found on the current iMacs, but will feature an all-in-one design with the logic board, optical drive and other components housed on the back of the flat-panel display.

Sources said the new model will be similar in design and style to Sony's VAIO W700G, but with sleeker lines and contours. "It's not fair to compare the new iMac to the Sony model," said a source. "But it's the closest thing to it that currently exists."

Experts Think Secret has spoken to believe one of the reasons for the decision not to include an optical drive on the educational model is to not only keep prices down, but to fulfill a request by many schools not to include the drive. Some schools have told Apple that they have experienced increased security problems from having optical drives in their Macs. Many schools have deliberately locked down their optical drives to prevent sharing and copying of copyrighted material.

The new iMacs will undoubtedly be criticized for their small amount of memory; one industry expert commented that it is time for Apple to include 512MB of memory in all its systems not just because most Windows-equipped PCs ship with that much RAM, but because many Mac applications now need that much memory to run efficiently. Many experts believe that Apple has decided not to jump to 512MB of RAM in an effort to protect profit margins, which are constantly under pressure and are looked at very carefully by market analysts and investors.

Just because no one said it yet, in 10.3.5 the following products were added (someone posted this on AI):

"Now PowerBook7,1 PowerBook7,2 PowerMac8,1 (new iMac) and PowerMac9,1 (?) all get the SMU_Neo2 specs. Hmm, in 10.3.4 just the PowerMac8,1 had that spec."

Image available here: http://www.rhumgod.com/experimental/neo2kext.jpg

PowerBook 7,1 and 7,2 are new but this is in the G5 category? Cheesy
PowerMac 8,1 is the iMac as mentioned
PowerMac 9,1 is a head scratcher, the current powermacs were in the last version (10.3.4) so perhaps a new midrange product or a new high end?

Lets get to talkin'.

The Powermac Dual 2.5 only works with 10.3.5 could it be that?

I still think it could be the 2.5Ghz. I wouldn't have thought the 2.5 would have come under the same number as it is different from the others.

Would be cool if it was a G5 Cube. That would be my next choice over the g5 imac.

Ross, 2 things.

Follow the link and click on PowerMac7,3 you'll see your model there.

Secondly the even numbers (ie the new PowerMac 8,1) are iMacs.

That is where the cube failed.  It was a choice after the iMac.  Unless Apple somehow stretches the speed of the processors, there is no need for a G5 Cube.  I mean wouldn't it be confusing to have a Dual 2 ghz G5, 2ghz iMac, 2ghz iCube.

Where dose the website get its information from?

Don't see why the 2.5 would be included in 10.3.4 if its not even supported by it.

Full of BS that didn't make sense.

The point was the Dual 2.5 is a powermac already with a number.
