Which mac to buy...

Hi everyone

My name is Jon and I am in the market for a new mac.  I dont have 3 grand to spend on a G5, and wouldnt need to because this computer would only be for monderate gaming and school.  I was looking at the 1ghz eMac, dvd rom- cd rw, 256 ram--- to buy which I found for only 669 dollars.  The other computer I am interested in is the imac (the new ones with the stand).  Maybe a 700mhz one (600 dollars) or even faster.  Do you guys have any expierences with either of these computers--possible pros and cons for each maybe that a virgin might not know about.  Or if you have an idea for a different kind of mac that I may be missing out on.  Any suggestions would be great.

Well, for the money I would look into a dual 1.25 desktop. You can find them under 1200.00US these days and even cheaper if you buy it off ebay slightly used. That way you can upgrade the video card some other time when you have the money, maybe the 9800xt. I think ebay maybe the way to go to get the most for your buck.

Macs are expensive, and for 700$ bucks, you'll get a refurbished G3 or an old G4. For the same price, you better buy a PC.

Now if you want a mac, it all depends what you wanna do with it. If you plan on playing games, just forget about it ( take a PC). But if its gonna be mostly for internet use and some office work, here's a link where you can check prices on refurbished systems:

Bobby that is pure bs. For like 1200 on eBay you can pick up a 1.6 G5. Go for it.

actualy bobby.. i have checked some prises and macs are not all the much more expencive.. I put together a pc wit hall the options that I have on My g5 and it totalted around $5000 where i got the g5 and a few others things for like $3500.

If you want an iMac, wait for the new G5 iMacs to come out. This will drop the price of a good used G4 iMac greatly. The eMac would be an extremely good choice, you could get a 1.25 GHz eMac without a SuperDrive for $750 w/ the edu discount.

Bobby, only someone whose not familiar with the PC industry would say that PC's are cheaper. Like with macs, if you want a top of the line PC, you're going to be spending 3-4 thousand bucks. Look for yourself: www.alienware.com

How much cash are you willing to spend? The best buy right now ( for a low end mac ) is probably the Dual 1.25GHZ G4. They're a tower, so you can continue to upgrade them as you get more money, unlike an iMac or eMac. You get what you pay for, but if you have, say, 900 bucks, I'd suggest doing whatever you can to get another 300 and pick up a Dual 1.25.

read my posts, i never said that. For 600 to 700$, you better get a PC, coz Macs @ that price are way too outdated (we're talking about an old G3 here for god's sake !!!!)

Jon, I just bought myself a G5 to replace my G4 700 iMac, which I am going to be selling soon. (As soon as I've fully made the transition to my G5)

If he has the 669 dollars for a eMac 1Ghz, he might as well wait for the 750 required for the eMac 1.25 with edu discount.

You could always wait until you have saved $1000, that'll give you some more options, now if you have 1500, you could get a decent computer.

I've seen Rev A single 1.8s on ebay going for almost 1500. They are hot like a iPod mini if they show up.
