Apple just released their new line of flat screen displays:
20" Alu, 23" Alu and !!!! 30" Alu !!!!

www.apple.com/displays/

to bad I can't afford one  Sad , the price for the 20" is still a bit high... not to mention the 30".

Wait, so there's a ridiculously good graphics card in the moniter. Does that stand in for the one in the computer, or does the moniter need a really good graphics card to keep up with the graphics from your shitty graphics card in the computer.

There is no graphics card in the monitor! But for the 30in you need a special one in a G5 Powermac to us it (NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL). It has dual link DVI because the 30in needs 2 DVI instead of the usual 1. But it has another Dual link so you can use 2 30in screens at the same time (thats 8 million pixels).

Like anyone is gonna buy 1(one) anyway.

You're gonna drop 3700 or 3900 on a 30" monitor? Ghost, if anyone does this, I'm not at all suprised it's you.

Actually, I can still swing an Apple Educational Discount because I'm working on my Masters Degree.  So it would ONLY be $2,999.   Grin

quote from apple store:
Quote
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL

The groundbreaking new NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra delivers the industry's first 16-pipe superscalar architecture and support for the world's fastest DDR3 memory to raise the bar for 3D graphics performance. The specifications of the GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU, are stunning: Using over 220 million transistors it supports a 256-bit interface for an effective memory bandwidth of 35.2 GB per second which delivers 600 million vertices, 6.4 billion textured pixels per second. The GPU is built on an AGP 8X board and includes 256MB of DDR3 memory for use in the most demanding graphics applications. It is the first card available to support the DVI standard dual link digital signal specification from the two DVI ports it features. This capability is required to drive the new 30-inch LCD, high resolution Apple Cinema HD display. The combination of a GeForce 6800 Ultra with a dual processor Power Mac G5 driving two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays is the definitive tool for the creative professional.

Special note on the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra: due to size of this advanced graphics card, the adjacent PCI or PCI-X slot will be blocked and cannot be used. This reduces the number of available PCI or PCI-X slots from three to two.

The only place where I could see 30" screens would be in Graphic Design firms and maybe a few Colleges.  They're priced so high because they aren't for everyday users.

Nope, they aren't for every day users. GS why the hell do you want one? What would you use it for? Buy a big ass plasma TV instead, to hang on the ceiling above your bed. Gaming on such a big screen is not recommendable, by the time you find your enemy, he allrdy killed you... For ppl who use 3D progs, graphic design progs and video editing tools it is really handy. With all the toolbars those progs have, your screen can become very crowded... I need one  Sad  altough my second screen allrdy does a part of the deal. Only in my 3D app i'm still short of space. Mb I'll save up for the 23", but then again, I could by an iBook or save a bit more for a pb...

OMG, I just need money!

If you've already got a kick ass G5, and you've got plenty of money, the 30" would be an incredible addition.

Why not ? If he can afford one, it'd sure make things look nice.

Sent is right, your only really ever going to need to use that sort of space if your working with big 3D apps, using somthing like FCP for Film editing or equivelent massive applications which have a huge array of pallets, windows and such like - not to mention the need of space to actually view what your doing!!

I really don't think this is a gaming monitor... Much better bet is the 23inch with one of the smexy graphics cards... Cheesy

almost forgot to drool over the release of Maya Unlimited Cheesy Now there is a programme where you wouldn't say no to a 30inch screen!  Grin

I played Madden once on a projector, it was awesome shit. If i had a big monitor, I'd just put it at the back of my desk.

Oh well....talked to the wife and it looks like she is going to limit my budget to the new 20" Display.  Honestly, it is probably as big as I have space for on my desktop anyways.

I would like to point out the fact that these displays have easily detachable stands. This leaves the displays open to 100s of 3rd part stands to be made easily.

I currently have the Apple 17" Flat Panel, which is actually as big as I ever thought I would want.  But the new displays just look so cool the way they match my G5.   Grin
