President Bush plans to unveil next month a sweeping mental health initiative that recommends screening for every citizen and promotes the use of expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs favored by supporters of the administration.

The New Freedom Initiative, according to a progress report, seeks to integrate mentally ill patients fully into the community by providing "services in the community, rather than institutions," the British Medical Journal reported.

Critics say the plan protects the profits of drug companies at the expense of the public.

The initiative began with Bush's launch in April 2002 of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, which conducted a "comprehensive study of the United States mental health service delivery system."

The panel found that "despite their prevalence, mental disorders often go undiagnosed" and recommended comprehensive mental health screening for "consumers of all ages," including preschool children.

Not completely true.  I, and much of my family, bank rolls the Republican Party, too....I am in the Automotive Industry, my father is in the ministry (Baptist Missionary), among others.

Ugh. Now I'm gonna have to buy all sorts of drugs? Damn it. I enjoy being an undiagnosed schizophrenic. Makes life interesting.   Hopefully they won't start opening up medical records to see if someone's family has a history of mental illnesses. Damn it.

And just think -- soon, some large uber-corp will own the human genome. Them, it can copyright it.

Then sue everyone for copyright infringment.

Or they can declare certain genes mutated, and make us all buy their gene therapy.

     I've said it before, and I still stand by it: the only thing that's going to make the human race viable in the long term (or even the medium-term) is if we develop a true science of the mind, toot sweet. The witch doctors and folk knowledge pretending to be mind doctors and mind science are not cutting it. I would guess that the average human living in a developed country is less sane than a person living in a developed country a hundred years ago.

I can agree with that in essence. But we are more sane than those living in Victorian England.
