Okay, here is my newest quiz....all about Aviation!  The winner of this quiz gets my practically new and hardly ever used copy of Aspyr's Command & Conquer Generals for the Mac.

The first person to come up with all the correct answers wins!

Here are the questions:[/b]

1.  Who received Pilot License #1 in the United States?

2.  What was the first Battleship sunk by aircraft (looking for the name of the Battleship and the date it was sunk)?

3.  On the P-38 Lightning, there was a high-polished oval (almost a mirror) on the inside of each engine nacelle facing the pilot...what was this for?

4.  What airplane holds the record of being produced in greater numbers than any other?

5.  What was the first airplane designed exclusively by computer?

6.  Who was the first U.S. President to fly in a helicopter?

7.  Who is the most decorated U.S. Pilot in History?

8.  What was the first name given to the F-4 Phantom II by the U.S. Air Force?

9.  What is the maximum theoretical bombload of the B-1B Lancer (theoretical because it has never been attempted)?

10.  Who was the first person to shoot down 5 enemy aircraft while flying a Jet Fighter?
[/b][/size]

Anyone can participate in this quiz, even if you have previously won one of my quizes!  Good Luck and Have Fun!

Mr Lothario wins the prize![/b]

1.? Who received Pilot License #1 in the United States?
Glenn Curtiss

Yes.  The reason the Wright Brothers didn't get the first licenses is simply because they issued them in alphabetical order at first.

2.? What was the first Battleship sunk by aircraft (looking for the name of the Battleship and the date it was sunk)?
German battleship Ostfriesland, 21 July 1921

Correct.  Billy Mitchell conducted an experiment on a captured WWI battleship to show that Airpower could sink major warships.

3.? On the P-38 Lightning, there was a high-polished oval (almost a mirror) on the inside of each engine nacelle facing the pilot...what was this for?
To confirm that the landing gear was down and locked.

Yes!  My grandfather told me about that one.

4.? What airplane holds the record of being produced in greater numbers than any other?
Cessna 172, 39,600 produced c. 2002

Correct!  Although the Russian IL-2 was the most produced MILITARY aircraft of all time, the little Cessna 172 pased it up for most produced aircraft of all time several years ago (by the way, the German Bf 109 comes in first for most produced fighter of all time, and 3rd most produced aircraft).

5.? What was the first airplane designed exclusively by computer?
Boeing 777

Yes, the Boeing 777 was designed down to the last rivet by CAD

6.? Who was the first U.S. President to fly in a helicopter?
Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957

Correct

7.? Who is the most decorated U.S. Pilot in History?
Col. George E. "Bud" Day

Yes, Air Force Col George Day served as a Marine in WWII, an Air Force Fighter pilot in the Korean War and Vietnam War, and was a POW for over 6 years in Vietnam.  Among others, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Distiguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Air Medal.

8.? What was the first name given to the F-4 Phantom II by the U.S. Air Force?
F-110A

Yes, before 1962, the Air Force version of the F-4 was known as the F-110 Spectre.

9.? What is the maximum theoretical bombload of the B-1B Lancer (theoretical because it has never been attempted)?
134,000 lbs.

Correct.  If you combine the maximum internal bombload and the maximum external bombload, the B-1B can theoretically carry 134,000 lbs of bombs

10.? Who was the first person to shoot down 5 enemy aircraft while flying a Jet Fighter?
Heinrich B?er

Correct, the Germans produced the first pilots to shoot down enemy aircraft while flying the Me 262 during WWII.  Heinrich B?er was the first jet pilot to become an ace.

Maybe one of these day I'll come up with a quiz that can't be answered in 25 minutes using search engines!

Maybe use the general knowledge of GhostSniper's life and stuff as questions. Stuff that only a few people on GR know.

Maybe one of these day I'll come up with a quiz that can't be answered in 25 minutes using search engines!

The only thing that stumped me was that damn locking of the gear. No google engine was finding it, and my Gandpa (a Canadian mechanic who served in Burma during WWII) had to clue.
