"Calling the approval of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts "the straw that broke the camel's back," a group of Christian activists is in the beginning stages of an effort to have one state secede from the United States to become its own sovereign nation.

"Our Christian republic has declined into a pagan democracy," says Cory Burnell, president of ChristianExodus.org, a non-profit corporation based in Tyler, Texas. "There are some issues people just can't take anymore, and [same-sex marriage] might finally wake up the complacent Christians.""

and

"... Burnell says South Carolina has been selected as the target location.

The plan initially calls for at least 12,000 Christians willing to be active in political campaigns to move to the Palmetto State.

Ahahahahahahahahhaha

Right, South Carollina, thats a prosperous state...surrounded by the U.S....mmmmhm
I say let them leave then nuke them, get them all in one nice tidy little spot and vualla, problem solved.

Plus, if they can do it before the November election, that means 12000+ less votes for Bush.  Thats a plus in my book any day.

I wonder if they ever read history, the whole "Civil War" thing, like how over half the country tried to leave the union, and got stomped.  Hmmmm...12000 crazy religious people vs the U.S. military.  Place your bets now folks! I've got five on the army.

Yes, well if gay couples are allowed to get married you know its going to lead to higher crime rates, taxes will go up, increased terrorism, no more freedom of speech, smog, meteor showers, the plague, and 5 out of 10 dentists will no longer approve of the use of listerine.  The same exact thing happened when we let women vote.

You're all missing the funniest part: most of the Founding Fathers weren't Christian. They were Spiritualists (if I recall correctly, the Spiritualist beliefs hold that a church or church figure is not needed nor wanted in order to speak to God. I seem to recall that they also did not believe that Jesus was the son of God, but I could easily be wrong on that point).

They were a funky bunch those Founders. They were the world's greatest liberals in their day.

These people are just as extremist as those Liberals on the other end of the spectrom.  You will always have extremists on one side or the other.  The thing that you have to remember is that the MAJORITY of the people are not too terribly far from the center.

I say let them have Florida instead. It's a nice sub-tropical peninsula we can isolate them on. And nobody likes Florida anyway...

Hey, maybe Jeb Bush would like to be their first president?

We can still export them to Florida. A side benefit of this is not having to pay their medicare bills.

first off, most of the founders believed that gotd was more like a clock maker. creating the universe and letting it run to see how things turned out IIRC (for git the name of the religion that was, it may be the same thing as loth mentioned, i don't know

2nd the US has NEVER been a christian democracy, instead it has been prodestant. with the exception of kennedy every president has been prodestant. JFK was catholic (not so sure on the prodestant part, but i know that Kennedy wasn't and i'm not sure about clinton or bush)

Clinton is a baptist and Bush is officialy a methodist. The Christians can come to Texas and combine with the Texan Republic, vote in appropriate members to the Texan Government, and then proclaim independence. Texas still has the right to suceed from the union if the local government approves the action (I hear a rumour we sold that right for highway money but I cannot verify it). Either way, Texas will be independent and Christains could have their theocracy.

Brain, the religion was Deism. "The religion of the Enlightenment." Very popular in early 1800s, due in part to Paine's The Age of Reason.

On the other hand, most presidents have been Protestant. Protestants are any of the groups of Christians that split from the Catholic Church in the Protestant Reformation. There's tons of Protestant segregations, including: Lutherism, Baptists, and Methodists.

A Christian is a very broad definition that i think is misused in the article. A person who believes in God, and Jesus Christ is his son is a "Christian". This can apply to Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants.

To go further, i know for certain that Catholics, Orthodox, and most Protestants firmly disagree with same sex marriage and homosexual acts. So whomever these "Christians" be, they are definately religious radicals out of touch with 90% of Christian church beliefs.

Lets outlaw religion altogether. I've done some good pondering on that, and it doesn't look all that bad when you think it through...

Obviously you haven't pondered it long enough.

In all seriousness, asking a real question here, what are the benefits of religion? Why do you think a religious state is superior to a rational state?

There is no benefit to "religion."  There is, however, a great benefit to being a Christian.  A Christian (one who has been saved), will actually go to heaven when they die.  Unfortunately, more people will go to hell in the name of "Religion" than anything else.

P.S.  It doesn't matter if you believe that or not, it WILL come to pass.  And then it will be too late if you did not believe it.  So hey, my money is on believing.   Wink
