Been looking into a processor upgrade that will boost my 733 Ghz quicksilver G4 to somewhere around 1.2 Ghz.  Have any of you done this?  Any experiences or thoughts?

Never done a processor upgrade before, but you can find excellent info on that topic on xlr8yourmac.

Hey dr Letum... Yeah we have on of the old original G4's that clocked in at 350Mz - a while back i bought an upgrade card for it and installed it with no problems - and the computer now runs at 800Mhz!

For what that comp is doing, it made a fantastic difference - allowed us to run 0SX on it, and make a whole host of differences. However it depends really how much power you need and want - the CPU isn't the whole deal, and you've got to take into account whether you are ok with everything ese staying the same - the system bus speed etc...
However in the short term it certainly is a lot cheaper than buying a new comp! Smiley

Depends how much you want to spend to upgrade that 733mhz G4.  The fastest upgrade went now is a G4 1.5ghz.  Also, you may want to upgrade the video card to like an ATI Radeon 9000, 9800 is expensive, but if you have the money get it!

Budget:
Get the 1ghz upgrade
Get an ATI Radeon 9000

Mid-range:
Get 1.2ghz
Ge an ATI Radeon 9000

Money money money:
1.5ghz
ATI radeon 9800

finding prices now...

That is possibly the stupidest advice you could ever give anyone. The Radeon 9800 will cost the same as the Radeon X800 (when i is release for mac) and the X800 will run circles around it. Not to mention the flood of almost equal NVIDIA Chips that are already mac compatible (just need someone to make the card that is) which also run circle around the 9800.

My advice for CPUs, if your gonna do it, got for the 1.2-1.5 range. If you still think the comp will be too weak, save your fucking money. Also, don't buy the 9800, if you need to upgrade the card then just buy a new comp, some G5 1.6s can be bought at a pretty good deal these days.

I think the 1.2 Ghz range should eb good enough for me.  But how can I improve my buss speed (currently 133Mhz)?  Is that possible? I'm looking to spend a total of around $500 for whatever upgrades i get.  I dont think my card is in bad shape, but then again it is the "stock" card (G-Force).

Do you think I should be ok with just upgrading the processor?

Unfortunatly you won't get any further than the processor upgrade. Well a bit more ram never goes amis - or a new GPU . But you can't do anything about the system bus speed im afraid! Sad

Dr. your frame rate will improve drastically if you buy the 1.4ghz upgrade and the ATI 9800pro AGP graphix card. Both together for about $500. Personally I would invest that money in a G5, but thats just my opinion.

Here is a list of all the upgrades that you can use on ur Quicksilver 733
ATI 9800 Pro
