Don't tell me you were one of the silly people who thought there would be G5 powerbooks?

I don't think this was a quiet update. The emac update was quite but this one was not. This was the day after NAB and the laptops were on the front page.

The 1.5Ghz G4 powerbooks is really cool and the option for a 128mb Graphics card is even cooler.

Also more good news is that Apple no longer has any systems under 1Ghz now.

Finally! I've been waiting for these updates for a while. Unfortunately none of the stores in the Los Angeles area have these in yet, but they should be getting them in tomorrow. Once I get to play around with both the 12" iBook and 12" PowerBook tomorrow, I'll be making my final decision and purchase. I'm pretty sure I'll be going with the PowerBook.

Another nice deal I forgot about is that you can get $99 off pretty much any HP printer. Basically you can get their low end $99 printer for free or a sweet discount on something better. My Epson (free with my PowerBook purchase 3 years ago) is kinda dying, so it will be nice to replace it free of charge.

My local Fry's already had these in stock earlier today. Anywho, you should probably wait until the USC computer store gets them in stock (or do you order directly through Apple?) so you can get a nice discount on one of them.

I went by the USC computer store today, and they said they wouldn't be getting them in for 3-4 weeks. That seemed odd to me, but oh well. The only reason I want to go to an Apple store in person is so I can get a feel for the machines. I want to check out issues like heat, noise, etc. that you can't do without a laptop in your hand. After that, I will order online and get the sweet edu discount.

BTW, which Fry's was it that had them?

AWH Crap Sad

From the BBC News website:

Quote
Mr Joswiak refused to be drawn on when the next generation of notebooks, using the PowerPC G5 processor, would be released.

The Power Mac G5 desktop was launched in June 2003. But Apple engineers are working on reducing the heat generated by the chip before it can be incorporated into notebooks.

"In the very long run, the G5 is part of our long term processor roadmap, but it will be some time before that processor will be in a notebook," said Mr Joswiak.

He declined to be pinned down to a date for G5 portables, but pointed out that it had taken at least two years for the G4 chip to make it from the desktop to the notebook.

Dont they always say that? Would be stupid to anounce the G5 powerbook now that they just released the new G4 powerbook. They are working under a veil of secrecy, mate.

The one in Manhattan Beach said they were getting their shipment of the new powerbooks in "shortly...within the next day or so." But then again it is Fry's, so you have to call again to make sure.
