This was linked to in a Slashdot story, and it's quite an interesting read. The tone of the article is entertaining, too. POWER to the people

Edit: Fixed the link. I pasted it twice, duh.

I just noticed this, in the final paragraph of the story: "Cheap processors with a billion transistors per chip are just around the corner, and industry watchers suggest we will reach speeds of 100 GHz by 2010." Hopefully those industry watchers are right.

Holy shit.

100ghz...

Just a curious question...
will computers/electronics ever be smarter then us and rule the world as the next dominant race in the future?

Had a revelation last nite before going to sleep.  When science gets a better understanding of REM, sleep, etc. ...  Future technology will allow us to explore online while physically sleeping.  Education to control dreams will begin at a young age.  Like the deep seas and space, an unconscious mind plugged into the net will be a never ending dimension of creativety, education, entertainment, training, and mischeviousness.  Imagine, they'll be fighting terrorism at night.  The Freddy virus will be a reality.

very matrixy, huh?

am I cookoo?

Heh, if there's one thing the human race could use, it's a true science of the mind.

while clock speeds will transcend the speed at which humans can think and reason(they have already in some processes such as simple math, while other more creative and abstract aspects are yet to come), i do not believe that we will be seeing true AI's until quite a ways off.

the human mind has the amazing ability to learn, something which, while simulated in video games, is no where near our current level of technological achievement. this problem could in theory be solved by working directly from the brain as a model, but the brain is the pinnacle of parallel processing design. as neurons die, new ones take their place with out any pause in operation.  this problem is confounded by the fact that nobody knows how the human mind actually works.  the current theory is that the brain is a complex chemical and electrical based computing network.  a design that works great in nature, but does not transfer well to a silicon and metal design.

even if these difficulties were surmounted, the creation of a chip of sufficient complexity and power would not be enough. software would have to be created of a magnitude  of complexity that would be unheard of to even begin to properly mimic the functions of a 'normal' human

And anyway, before "true" AI is developed, I'd like to see work on implementing Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. No Skynet for me, thanks.

true...although those rules essentially reduce robots to a slave race (or the social status thereof)  i guess the laws of robotics open up a huge can of worms morally as far as i am concerned, as well as being a little over simplified.  but i do agree that making a computer that one day decides humans aren't necessary is about an 8 on a scale  from 1 to bad

IF we are talking "true AI" then i think its a long way away... sure we have fantastic computers that are doing the most amazing stuff... bloody fast! but they are simply following calulations that we have designed them to do... When there is AI that learns, that creats its own calculations, that is aware of itself and how it develops, which modifies itself and reacts, that can debate an arugment without following guildlines... that can create its own thought processes.. untill then i think everything we create can never match up to the vastly superior computer that is the human brain...
