Lagtest frustrations...(GhR)

Ok here's the deal. I have been having major problems with the Lagtests on the small docks. The map is laggy in general, and there is no way to tell whether there will be lag in the cb or not. Many times it is laggy on docks with lots of nades, but on larger maps there is no lag. Sometimes it is laggy on docks and there IS lag on normal maps.
A few days ago, I played in a 3v3 cb. I lagged a little on the lagtest, but I thought the lag was caused because of the small map. The first real game of the cb i started to lag out and my computer went crazy with lag and i got shot before i knew what hit me. The same thing happened the second game. And the third.
My point is, that if you want to test lag, the lagtest should be on a normal sized map with an average amount of lag for GhR maps. This is the only way to know if lag is caused by the host and not just by a small map. I would like to suggest a change of rules in next seasons battle league. I cant stand this any longer.

i agree
.... Some comps cant even handle the docks map, like i remember a cb iN vs GM - Where Sentinel couldent handle that map cause his comp was too slow... but i dunno about if it is his problem or (ours)
But The Point is Gabe is Right!

The rules just talk about doing lagtests in general, you don't have to do it on docks only.
6. Before a CB begins, the first host can start a Lag Test. A lag test is considered a warm up in which a maximum of 3 games may be played with random team
I definitely suggest doing each of those 3 on different maps. Stronghold is good, little bit bigger, and has trees which tend to bog down computers and add to any lag. But the main point is that you're not locked into doing lag tests only on certain maps.

I totally agree about the lagtests. But there is nothing really to do but either get a better connection, or just try to get the latency down as low as you can. But that is tough too! But meh...

Stronghold was always my favorite lagtest map too. I'd like to see the lagtest rules revised.

just ask for the lagtest to be played on another map. the lagtest rule doesnt order anything... u have the right to ask for it, since the host probably wants you to accept his server.

I agree with the lag tests. I think that there should actually be a few maps that shouldn't be allowed in CBs because just every one cant handle them. Like Docks(I lothe that level).

It seems strange to me that there is nothing in the rules that even mentions playing the lagtest on docks, becuase most clans we cb just set it to docks as the standard. A few clans have even insisted that it had to be done on docks. Anyway, thanks for the advice splinter, i will ask for a lagtest on a different map next time.
One of my problems is that I have an airport and its really unreliable sometimes. The signal fluctuates up and down regularly, sometimes i cant even connect because there isn't even a signal (or an extremely low one). There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when i get a good signal or a bad one. Just a week or so ago i bought an "ExtendAIR" (Dr. Botts). It is basically an external arial that i can hook into my G5 that is supposed to heighten the signal. Before i got this, my signal was two bars. After getting it, my signal is still two bars. I think i just wasted 100 bucks. :\
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys

you might need an antenna on the airport base too to help w/ the signal

I just unplugged my ExtendAIR yesterday and plugged back in the small arial that came with my g5. My signal is now 4 bars instead of two. WTF??? this is ludicrus.
Another thing. If i lean my body over in front of my computer, my signal goes up. I have tested this repeatedly and have determined that my brain is telepathizing with the airport base station and actually improving the signal. I dunno what this means, but it is pretty awesome. I wonder what else i could do with these powers. I'll let you know after i do a little experimenting.

The human body is a natural ground....and also a natural antenna.

Alright kids...
The lag tests are obviously performed to determine whether or not there will be lag in the game. One of the reasons why Small Docks is usually picked is because the fact that it is the smallest map and that it does lag. The reasoning behind this is simple; If you don't lag on Small Docks, there is a great chance you will have a very smoothe CB. Now, as for you folks asking for a rule change, I ask you this: When were you ever forced to do a lag test on any particular map? When were you forced to go ahead with a CB even though you didn't want to due to lag? Zip up your panties and pull out your cocks gentlemen. Time to sort this thing out once and for all.
In order to play GhR and have a very smoothe experience, you need: A very good connection, a very good video card, and great amount of RAM. Anything less than that, then you are going to have to turn down some settings in your video preferences and stop running your iTunes in the background. Basically, the better the hardware you have the better the experience. Some people are used to playing with 5 FPS, whereas I am used to 50+ FPS. Anyway, that's what you need on your side. For the person who is hosting, please know if you are able to actually host a CB. A 128kbps upload isn't going to cut it, and you definitely shouldn't host a CB. The host needs to have a connection that can "host" all of the players. Now, as for maps, remember guys, you agree on the lag tests and maps in which they are played. If the other clan doesn't like this, then leave the CB. The CB that Gabe played in was entirely at his doing. He had the choice, which was after each lag test, to ask for: a larger map, a switch of host, less nading.
The rules do not need to be changed. The rules clearly state that you must agree to the lag test, and that if you do not agree, you
cannot be forced
to play on that host. Some of you are so afraid to say anything and I know this from the experience from playing with some of you. If you don't like it, then don't play it. Don't whine about lag tests when you actually have the means, and the rules, behind you 100%.
As for the map selections for a lag test, why not try these lovely maps? Small River, Castle Day, Train Wreck, Stronghold, & Red Square. Al of these maps are played in CBs nowadays, and all of them are either small enough, or basic enough, to perform a lag test. Keep in mind that the more players you have, the more you should choose larger maps, even for lag tests.
I'm not trying to breathe fire down anyone's neck, but when the rules specifically say you have the choice, it has done its job. As for the issue of having a rule changed to state something along the lines of which maps can be used, how about this; Don't play GhR is your iMac 400 w/ 32MB Ram can't support it. Yes that's right, there are quite a few people out there playing on terrible machines for gaming, and can do so only with a great connection. My suggestion for Gabe would be to turn down, or off, all video and graphic extras, make sure nothing is running in the background, and perhaps use a memory booster. Other than that, ask for a new map, or a new host. Don't blame your shortcomings on a clearly written rule, or the fact that a certain map has become tradition. You have the means to create your own, new tradition. You also have the means to change your situation in the game.

Gabe.. its radio waves - just think what happens when u stand next to your radio, tune it and then walk away
or those little portable tvs!
Worth remembering guys that if both clans are in agreement you could do 6 lag tests on six different maps, or whatever you like. as long as both clans are inagreement, the rules are just guidance if there is not agreement.
regarding comps.. most of the old regulars play with settings on the lowest settings anway..

A couple points here:
1) Just ask them to do the lagtest on another map. If they refuse, don't CB, it's simple as that.
2) Lagtests are funny anyway, because some clans were known to just grab OICW/GL's and nade spam with them so that they could call lag. Just to avoid a host.
3) Don't forget that there are a few neutral servers out there (MP1&2, VooDoo, X1,
Aramarth
) that are high bandwidth that will let you CB on them.
4) Don't CB while on airport. By it's very nature, 802.11b (and g), aka Airport, lag. They drop packets, send over lots of duplicates all as part of the standard, part of the built in error correction. So, whenever possible, for gaming (and especially CB's) plug in that cable.
