Its not gonna be long from now that the new Powerbooks will be released.
I say this because ATI just released a new Mobility graphics card.
Check thislink.

With that Sentinel, Apple will probably put a modified G5 proccessor in the new PowerBooks.  They solved the G4 proccessor problem for the PowerBooks, now they might sove it for G5!

Am i the only person that has heard a rumor, or prediction maybe, that they are working hard on G5 powerbooks, liquid cooled, G5 powerbooks...

That would be interesting.  Anyone have ideas on how they'd manage that without attatching a refridgerator onto the back of it?

They definately are working on G5 powerbooks, and liquid cooled I believe is just a rumor at this point. Unfortunately I wouldn't know how this is done. If it were up to me I would probably have ice water flowing throughout the motherboard, the airport card, the graphics card, the memory, the keyboard, and all that good stuff to keep it nice and cool.

But that's why it's not up to me.

Maybe they are gonna attach 4 or 6 fans under the powerbook. The same quiet fans as in the G5. This would make the powerbook act like a hovercraft and since its not sitting on your lap anymore, its floating now, you'll never burn your lap again while doing have tasks.  Wink

Or they can use little bottles of nitrogening (sherlock translation Wink )  inside to keep it cool. Or could that be dangerous. Grin

Liquid cooling isn't gonna be needed. Look at the Xserve with 2 processors, if youwwant to know how they are going to put in the G5s look at those.

Either way expect G5 PowerBooks at WWDC, there probably will be a rev inbetween cause people are gonna want their 9700s.

Ok, so lets put it this way, if you plugged a Dual 2 Ghz G5 into a laptop, plus lets say 1 ghz RAM and all the other little goodies that come with (radeon 9800 lets say, to keep with the "way more than youll ever need" theme)  And attempt to stuff it into the existing size restrictions they have now (all dimensions, thickness, width, and length)  and try to keep it cool with the two fans that are in the powerbooks, the thing wont turn red hot and simply melt?

Even now w/ my G4 powerbook, it gets quite toasty on the underside.
So i see two, and one totally far fetched, possibilities Apple engineers have.

1) Somehow liquid cool it, with perhaps is slight increase in size for the extra processor size, & cooling apparatus, but keep it insanely small, which seems highly unlikely

2) Increse the size significantly, in one dimension or another, so that you can either stick more fans in, or space out the hardware so there is more area for it to cool off, or, if they cant make the liquid cooling system small enough, fit it in the extra space.

Third and finally, just idly talking with my friend about this today, he said he wanted to see them make a laptop with a jet intake of sorts.  Suffice to say i gave him an odd look then quickly walked away after that.

The other thing to consider is how much noise are they going to allow it to make?  If they put in more fans, its going to get quite a bit louder, and with the movement towards quieter computers, more  and bigger fans would be slightly difficult, no matter where or how you compartmentalized the computer's guts.

It will prob use the same style of liquid cooling that some of the pc laptops are using.

First, Apple would not be putting out a dual G5 laptop. I've can't ever remember seeing anyone make a dual processor laptop, and a single processor G5 laptop is already at the top of the class for notebooks. Second, from what I've read, a 2 GHz G5 on the 90 micron fab should put out ~30-35 W, which is definitely low enough for Apple engineers to cram into the existing PowerBook cases (save maybe the 12"). Third, from the article in the first post, the new 9700 Mobility should actually use less power than the 9600 Mobility that is currently in the PowerBooks.

In short, don't be surprised to see G5 PowerBooks sometime soon.

Maybe I am remembering poorly, but I actually think Steve announced that the powerbooks are gonna be released this fall. I heard he said this to the press when he was at the Paris Expo (2003). I was there but I was not press so I can't confirm it...

Steve has never gone on record about G5 Powerbooks.

Updates to the manafaturing process of th G5 processers reduces the power supply needed and thus reduces heat... Therefor as IBM have been working hard to (and have a great road map to) reduce the manafacturing size of the processors the heat problem will literally get smaller and smaller and smaller

Steve has never gone on record about G5 Powerbooks.

Couple corrections... Ace, Acri is right in that Steve actually did tell us that he "promises" they will be out "no later than" this upcoming xmas. I'm almost positive the laptops won't be out "soon" (less than 6 months). But hey, Apple is known for releasing stuff even before they say they will... ::rolleyes::

As far as the G5 cooling problem goes, I also heard from a eweek/businessweek/wtf article they've already fixed it. They've got some damn smart peopling working there, and i seriously doubt you guys are correct in assuming they only thought of this problem once the G5 desktops were released.

Oh, and c| Lone Wolf, noise is not directly proportional to number of installed fans... even with the G5 desktops' total of *9* fans, i've heard they are the quieter than the quicksilvers.

Blufire, i know that the G5's are whisper quiet, and they do have 9 fans, but they are compartmentalized in part to keep fan noise down to an absolute minimum.  But if youre trying to compartmentalize and put 9 fans in a laptop (exagerating) and stay within the 15 (or 17) inch case, i would think youd have some major problems (after looking at the already very, very cramped insides of my G4)

And Ace, i wasnt seriously trying to say they should put a Dual 2Ghz into a laptop, i was just dreaming/exagerating.  Youve got to admit tho, it would be an interesting thing if they put a Dual 2ghz into a 15"  Interesting in that "i feel like im going to pass out" kind of way.

Regarding the Fans....

G5's are a lot quieter, firstly yes becasue of the 3 tier compartmentisation of the internals but also as each fan has a temp sensor and can be individually turned on and off.. The whole de-heating system is just one hell of a lot more efficent.

Seeing a single processor G5 laptop might be not out of the question soon, but i would eat my hat if we see a duel G5 laptop within Six months... That would really blow the opposition out the water

Did this topic go from one to another? I mean, didn't the topic start at "design of PowerBook for new vid card?"  Now it went to G5 proccessors in PowerBooks. What is wrong with us...

Agreed

The people at Apple are geiniuses they will find some way of cooling it weather it is fans up the wazoo or liquid cooling or weather it is a special technique of blowing on it.
Fact is I don't care if it gets a little hot I will just put as many fans in it as I can.  It will buzz like a fucker but it will still be the best laptop out there.
