2xG5 1.8 vs single G5 1.8

Hello Dudes,

I have one question, is there any really noticable speedboost in Games or Apps with the double G5?

Do I really need the second processor?

What I do on the mac:  gaming, Office, some Perl programming, watching DVDs, Internet, Webdesign, and CAD for my work ( hopefully AutoCAD comes out for Mac ) And a few other things.

At the moment I dont have to do anything with Video editing, or 3D Rendering.


B/C I think of buying a G5 - but I am not really sure whichone I should buy.
The single G5 with SD and lot of RAM, or the standard 2xG5 1.8.

So what would you do? get the sigle with good Grafixcard and lots of RAM or a standart  double.

dont buy ram afom apple.. you can find it cheeper elsewhere.. I had same debate.. i went w/ dual 1.8.

It is nice that U have the dual :-) --- but is there any real use for the second prozessor?  Any noticable boost in work, or gaming.

What I have seen on PC, the speed boosts mostly came from the better grafixcards.

What connfiguration do u have? Grafix? RAM? SD or COMBO?

for gaming you won't need the second cpu, because there are hardly any games that use it. Quake 3 and games based on its engine come with dual support, and it really boosts fps. but most games don't use the dual. ut2k3 e.g. uses it only for the audio thread, and thats about 4% (correct me if i'm wrong) of the total load. RS, GhR ... don't use it.

other programs make more or less use of dual cpu's, like the finder (sic!).

but the question which one to buy remains. at which price would you get the single 1.8? depends on the price, but maybe for gaming the single 1.8 with a Radeon 9800 would be the best combo.

I will get the G5 1.8 single for arround 1800 EUR - and later I will buy a ATI 9800PRO for it. that makes  1800 + 500 = 2300

If you are thinking about the long haul, get the dual 1.8, no questions asked. OS X is very good at taking advantage of multiple processors, so the dual 1.8 will have a much longer lifespan than the single 1.8. You can always add more RAM or change the GPU later.

Acording to the recent macaddict magazine there is no difference between the 9600 and 9600 in a dual 1.8ghz G5 for gaming. However i've seen otherwise on different sites.

You will want to begin giving blood, semen and organs to raise money for ram if you want to play games.

He made a spell fault: He wanted to say "there is no difference between the 9600 and 9800 in a dual 1.8ghz G5 for gaming".

I would also leave the graphic card in it at the moment and only upgrade RAM for the moment to 1.5 Gig(2 512MB RAM slots aren't that expensive anymore).

Any of you guys have any intel on G5 speed bumps. I was hoping to read about news of a G5 dual 3ghz after the keynote but only heard about the xserve G5.

I have to say I feel kicked in the sac by Apple. I stupidly took advantage of the Refrub Single G5 1.8. It arrived yesterday and was dead out of the box. Its been a long time since I've gotten that pissed at an inanimate object, as I nearly launched the gigantic tower out the window. I took it to the Apple Store and its covered by warranty, but I still feel betrayed by Apple. Check out the apple G5 forums under Support , you'll find numerous issues with the single 1.8, I wish I would have known this before I ordered the piece of shit, but hopefully it will come back in functional condition.
