I thought the most you can lose in a cqb cb is 300 points....but we lost 590 pints in a cb

No, there is no cap on how many points you can lose.  If you play clans that are 5 or more ranks below you you lose 20 percent of your combat points.  Clans between 1-4 are a lower percentage.
