Icon Question

Alright so its summer and I'm amusing myself with some pretty pointless stuff. I am in the process of downloading desktop pictures and icon sets and have come across a problem. I do not know how to replace the icons for integral folders (like "Applications", "System", and "Users"). They cannot be changed by simply pasting your new icon over the old one - when I try this nothing happens. Does anyone know if it is possible to change the icons for these folders? If so, can you tell me how? Possibly some sort of resource editing trick? I want my computer to look cool and I'm bored off my ass, so any help would be appreciated.

Does the paste thing work with the HD too? Because I have a sweet ass Grateful Dead HD icon that is being used to hold my SS's right now, but it would be sexy as an HD.

yeah it works with teh harddrive, just not with any of the aforementioned programs. i am using this sweet set of voodoo icons. i really wish i could get them on all my folders though.
