Has anyone else tried the new browser for osx, safari? I'm on it right now, it seems cool, except I can't log into hotmail for some reason, it always tells me to retype my password. Well, if you think it's cool post, or if you think that you can help me with my problem, well post too. Thank you. Cheesy Actually I figured it out? Just post your comments on it.

I personally like the idea of a new browser? who better than apple to make a browser optimized for jaguar? I think that this beta is a bit clunky but I think it will get better when the final version is released. The bar on the URL form that shows what percentage of the page has loaded is cool/useful. So far I haven't had any problems, but then again I haven't really done much with it yet. Oh ya I just discovered it has a popup blocker?? I love you apple!

Another question: Do you think the development of their own applications to compete with Microsoft apps or otherwise by Apple is a good idea? Do you think that an Apple created product will be able to reach success against, say, Microsoft Word? Or do they have too much of a stranglehold on the industry?

i dislike the metalic look of safari, i tried it out for a bit and it worked good. It does lack Tabs, and a easy way of importing bookmarks from chimera. I think i'll stick with chimera untill they put those features in. Also safari hangs for a second when i click a link because of my proxy, chimera doesn't do this.

Safari flys for me, it's amazing.  I actually feel like I'm on a broadband connection now.

I think apple's biggest product to compete w/ Microsoft is their new app Keynote.  What a sexy app, hopefully it will put a dent in powerpoint, but it's only for mac  so bring on the switchers.

Indeed Safari is damn fast however it sill has some bugs: e.g. the javascript:history.back(1) command doesn't work properly.

Btw I fixed the font size of the BL also for Safari so it should work fine now except the skillpoint and games row. I couldn't find the right line within the thousand lines of BL php code. Elandrion will do this asap.

Great browser Apple however you also have to fix the cookie managment. New default values for the masses Wink

So far my only complaint with Safari is that it basically logs me out of the forums every time I click on a thread or anything. As far as it not supporting tabed browsing, that's not a biggy for me as I've been using IE for a while and can't get used to tabbed browsing. One thing that I do like about Safari is that it automatically imported my IE favorites for me. And it is fast as hell.

I love it, it's a great browser, I never did try Chimera because I was lazy but this just owns IE in every way, 'cept it has some bugs (logging out of the DAMN forums for one). The final 1.0 release will just kick ass.  Grin

Do you have to enable cookies?
Please don't yell at me I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff...
but it's a new browser = new prefs, so you might have to do something with that.

Jeb, 2 of your 3 problems with safari can be fixed using the hints on this page.

http://macosxhints.com/

Just scroll down a bit, you'll see 'em. As for tabbed browsing, not yet but soon I hope.

Ya, a problem so far is that it I have javascript enabled but some sites say I need to enable javascript. Another problem is that sometimes it doesn't load a page when the page is there, it just gives a silly "30 second timeout" excuse.

Wooo!
Overall, Safari kicks ass, much more than I had expected.  It's easily the fastest browser of the three I have on my system (Safari, IE, Chimera), though, like most people, I can't wait to have tabbed browsing back (sucks having to go through all these open windows...).
About the brushed metal look...I don't think the metal texture itself is what looks bad, it's those silly looking buttons.  The iTunes UI, IMO, looks damn fine.  The buttons and window controls just look a hell of a lot better in iTunes than in Safari, so I'm thinking if they make the Safari buttons and controls more like those in iTunes, it should look a bit cooler.  Otherwise, way to go Apple!

Things i have noticed about safari is that gifs run really fast (doesn't matter now since i set my proxy to block the looping feature in gifs), javascript rollovers are fast.

Last night after i spent a long time revisting sites to add to the bookmarks i noticed that my computer was slowing down; safari, iTunes, Adium, and GR where the only apps on (i've got 768megs of ram). I checked process viewer to see what the slowdown was... and there was safari taking up a wooping 75% of cpu usage while no webpage were open and it was in the background. I fixed this by deleting the cache, i think safari gets a whole lot of its speed from its cache. After deleting the cache safari went back to using .01% of the cpu while in the background. Just a warning incase this happens to you.

This broswer has a shitload of potential (but i want tabs damnit)

with the advent of safari, i have decided to make the total "iApp" conversion, throwing out IE, AIM, Eudora, and Audion for safari, iChat, Mail, and iTunes. I must say, although the interfaces of these programs are less customizable, I am loving it. Especially ichat, i never knew how convenient that program was (ex, the way it fits with mail). I think that these apps are elegant, fast, and useful and that apple did a great job on them. also, can someone answer this "tabs" question for me, im not sure i know what they are. i find the bookmark system in safari to be great, since it automatically imported ALL of my internet explorer bookmarks for me. i organized my bookmarks in menus and put them in the browser window as pulldown menus. This has worked well for me and makes for fast browsing.

I'm not sure what you all mean who don't like it.  IT'S A BETA!!!!  And for a beta, I LOVE IT!

It has some issues, but if their feedback thing is working and they listen to me, they will hopefully be fixing them in their very next release.

But what's with tabs?  You can use menus. . .it might take a small adjustment, but other that that there's no reason I can think of that you need them.  I think Safari rocks!  Go APPLE!  YAY!

Ok. . .I think I'll get some sleep now. . .

« Reply #17 on: January 09, 2003, 05:35:25 am »

I seem to be staying logged in now. I haven't changed anything in Safari from the last time I was here.

I think the issue is a problem with Safari keeping and/or reading the cookies from the forums. I have sent this as a bug report to Apple so hopefully it'll be straightened out by the final release.

Safari rocks. IE is no longer in my dock, and if it wasn't one of the most widely used browsers out there it would be gone from mmy system, but I do a bit of web design so need it for testing only.

I think I'd already moved Safari at the time of my posting, but maybe not. . .huh.

Or maybe Apple fixed it and Safari automatically updated in the background???  Because it works now. . .I'm running Safari.
