What I do is look for Hi-Res pics on the web. Even if it is part of a weapon I save it. Then when I am ready to make a new weapon I take all the parts...I open them one at a time...select the pic and copy it to a new psd file. I then trace around the object and delete the background. Once that is done with each part I simply make a new .psd file and put all the parts in on a different layer. A good weapon will be 15 - 20 layers, or parts.

I've been doing a simialr technique but using existing pictures on the net (dont do half the work cobra does, but thats cause Im lazy Wink )
I do mess around witht e colour/contrast etc resizing.
Cobra's way will get better textures plus his way youll be able to modify the weapon more and/or make multiple versions of the same rifle

I am about 1/2 way done with the tutorial. I give you a zipped file with different pics of the SR-47 and I take you step by step on how to piece it together to make a very nice Hi-Res texture. If you follow those steps on all your textures you will always have great textures for your 3DSMAX models.

EXACTLY!!! I have base textures of weapons i.e. MP5 and all I do is turn layers on and off and then I have different weapons.
