Chick Hearn, born Francis Dayle Hearn, was a sports newscaster for a Los Angeles television station in 1961 when Los Angeles Lakers owner Jack Kent Cooke asked him to announce Laker games. The rest is history. Hearn has been the play-by-play sportscaster for the Los Angeles Lakers since then. In fact, he has been the only sports announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers. Hearn announced 3,338? consecutive Laker games until he was forced to be absent for the December 20, 2001 game due to heart surgery. Although he has had to bow out of a few games halfway through, Hearn had not missed a single Laker game since November 20, 1965.
Chick Hearn was the first to use such basketball terms as "slam dunk," "air ball," "dribble drive," "finger roll," "garbage time," "give and go," "matador defense," "no-look pass," and "picked his pocket."
On August 5, 2002, ? Chick Hearn passed away Sad ?Basketball lost whom many us believe was the greatest basketball play-by-play announcer of all time. ?We will miss him terribly and will always honor his name and his commitment to the L.A. Lakers!

Where did you copy all of that down from...it looks familiar like a newspaper article or something.

Anyway, you watch the funeral, Rapid?

yeah, I got some facts from some newspapers clippings.

I watched it and it was quite touching.  All the old players and famous stars came out to see him and it was quite touching.  I shed a tear for Chick and kicked myself in the ass for not taping Game 7 vs the Kings.  Chick went off in that game and I only wished I would've taped it to show my kids later in life.  Chick was all time great and he will ride with me and I will always speak highly of him to all. Rest In Peace Chicky Baby!  I wubs You!

Well, I'm a Lakers fan but being in Colorado I can't say I'd actually heard of him until I heard about his accident on the Jim Rome Show...sounds like he was a great man who will be missed.

Speaking as someone who has never watched a Baskettball game on TV, but is a big fan and listens to all the games, though not on Lakers radio, and never heard him, Just hearing quotes from what he said etc, he sounds like a great person, also I would like to comment on how lacking the coverage of his hospitalization was, I was listen to Sporting News radio during it, they kept going back between "Critical, Stable, and Critical but stable", they never really gave an acurate report on it.

I listen to in for the humor of it, not so much for sports.  I just love how sarcastic he is.  Too bad it is on while I'm in school most of the time so I only catch 15 min when I drive.

Typhy, after the first surgery Chick was doing fine, but while in the ICU, he had another hemorrhage that ended up killing him. So for a point he was in critical and stable condidtion, then he ended up forcing his wife to pull the plug on him.
