Okay,
You all inspire me, you know what they say about mimickery being the sincerest form of flattery? Well I am tryin to create my first model, and texture.. I am having trouble gettting the skin on my model. I can create a rudimentary 3d model, but cannot get the texture to appear?

Anyone care to help a total newbie?  Sad

Select whole model.
Group it.
 Go to rendering tab.
Go to Material editor.
Select your pic
drop it onto model

Go to modify
Select UVW map.

Select sub object
make sure planar is selected
Set the alignment (X,Y orZ)so the yellow plane is aligned with the side view of the model
Select bitmap fit at the bottom
find your texture, and select open.
If you render the texture should be on the model but probably not correct.
Youll have to scale the yellow box till the texture fits properly.

This should do it.

There was a web site which had a pictorial of how to do it.

Thanks Dave-s I will give that a try, I was following a tut over at the platoon, but it was for versions 2-3 of 3dsm, and specifically said v4.x was different, I am using 4.2. I will follow your guide, and see what I come up with.

Really appreciate the help.

As far as texturing a weapon or object, it the same process for version 3 or 4. If you need additional tutorials, let me know and I'll look for some links.

coco...

I am still having some problems....the tutorial I have been following makes it seem like I can just insert a jpeg or bmp into the materials editor and then dreag and drop it to my model. I'm sure I am missing something. every time I try to do the with my imported pic, i get that little thing that says it not allowed (the circle with the line through it).

I'm out of herre for the weekend but will pick it up when I get back.

First make sure you have all the plugins installed from you latest GR disk. The GR plugins allow you to use .RSB's to texture, without the plugin you could not use an RSB. it's a lot of steps but gets repetitive after about 400 models, lol.

THanks Coco,

I am trying to import a jpeg/bitmap, havent tried an .rsb, I will give that a shot. I have checked and double chekced my plugins, they install where they need to go in the .zip when extracted right? Or do I need to put them somewhere specific?

I do know that I can open .rsbs in photo shop, but not sure about 3DSM...

400 models....i feel so little  Embarrassed

Well, you have to manually place the 3ds plugins into the "plugins" folder inside the 3dstudiomax main folder. The plugins are on your GR cd in the "extras" folder.

That would apply to a rogue spear weapon, which required a BMP in 3dstudio, and an RSB in the actual mod. The GR plugins allow the use of rsb's. I have never tried to export a RS model with the GR plugins so i don't know what would happen as far as the texture issue goes...

Is it possible, to pull weapons/.qob's into 3dsm from say RS/UO/GR, as I understand it is NOT possible, am I correct?

My appologies for running everyone through the basics again.

Well, QOB's cannot be opened with 3DStudioMax. They can be exported, but not opened. Mike Schell has converted a lot of the models from GR, DS and IT into .3ds format, so they can be opened, modified, and exported. Check over at http://www.planetrainbowsix.com/atwar for the downloads section.

I cannot tell you how long I have been looking for just these weapons, I actually had Parabellum over at DRAG offer to pull them from his harddrive for me. Thanks Coco...

Stay Tuned, I might be posting some screenshots of my very first weapon. assuming I don't go crazy first.
