Well, it isn't Science Fiction at all, it is fantasy through and through. But the fact that children are percieved as the main audience has kept many from seeing what a brilliant literary work the series is. And it manages to do this while put in a story that is engaging. And most importantly it has gotten kids reading again. As you can see from many people here, reading isn't considered a fun hobby some. I personally love reading, I usually find one author at a time and read all their books and then move on. Also on my priority list is to read the top 100 novels ever (according to Harvard). I'm not making much progress there as I'm busy and have fun books to read.
I've probably read about 10 of them so far due to school.

I wouldnt call either Harry Potter or LotR si-fi but both of them are very engaging series. As for the Hobbit it very boring in the beginning but it got much better towards the end, and it set the scene for the trilogy to follow. As for Harry Potter everyone thinks oh god this is a childrens book I'm too old for this, but then you read it and you cant help yourself because you wont stop reading until you're done with the series. Another series I like is The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, they aren't exactly short reads but they are easy and cool.

One of my favorite science fiction pastimes is purchasing old anthologies of very early and early sf (1935-1945 and 1945-1960, respectively and roughly). The very early stuff is often crude and unpolished, and when it's not, it generally still has an archaic feel to it. Nevertheless, it's exciting to read the work of authors who were building the foundation of a genre. While reading some of the earliest sf stories, I've thought things like, "Ah, that old clich?," then checked the date and realized that that story was very possibly the first time that particular plot device (now a clich?) had been employed. History is fun. : )

My list is as follows:
Chrichton
Baldacci
Herbert
Alan Foster
Harry Turtledove (kind of a gay name i know, good books though)
Lord of the rings is half way interesting, I continued to read it because I heard countless promises that it was a great book. As for harry poter, it is writen as a childrens book and will never become more than that.

sorry to bring back this old thread... but I just remembered Herbert.... Dune was great and the two books his son wrote were great as well.
