After reading (and posting) on the wide variety of political issues that are currently raging in the forums, I thought that it would be a nice change of pace to discuss something that isn't quite as heavy. So anyway, what are you guys listening to right now? What are your favorite groups/musicians? Music IS the universal language?

What I am listening to right now:
Mountain Goats- All Hail West Texas!
Outkast- Stankonia (classic)
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs box set
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Beulah - When Your Heartstrings Break
Enon - High Society

I am going to mucho concerts in October too??I am seeing Clinic/Apples in Stereo, Dismemberment Plan, Enon, and Pedro the Lion.

My 2 main resources for music news/reviews:

Garbage, NSYNC, Spice Girls, dc Talk, Billy Joel, soundtrack of Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar. There are countless people that I have songs of in my iTunes library but these are the most numerous I suppose...or at least the ones I listen too most.

Brain, Dvorak's Symphony for the New World is a must have.

Prokofiev, the guy who wrote Peter and the Wolf is also one to consider.

Maybe Mahler's 5th as well.

One of these days I'm going to have to raid my Mom's classical music collection and see what I have and what I should try to find.

P.S. Mozart owns all.

Brain, don't forget Henichen's "Dresden Concerti". Heinichen was a little-known composer who should have been more famous. Good stuff.

At the present time, I'm most into video game music and remixes thereof. Accordingly, I hit www.vgmix.com and remix.overclocked.org quite a bit. My current favorite songs/remixes and the games they're from:
The Police Station - from Toki no sugiyuku mama ni (I dunno either. Some Japanese game that was never released here.)
Friendly Happy Robot - from Chrono Trigger
Inna's Tetris Song - from Tetris, obviously
Zillion MelodicTrance OC Remix - from a Japanese game called Zillion
Breezy (BTP Remix) - from FF8
Wicked Orchestra - from Castlevania

Other than that, I'm listening to a fair bit of anime soundtracks (mostly Love Hina), and of course the standbys like Mr. Heinichen and co., Noisepie, the Aquabats, the Brown Derbies, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Golden Shower, and so on.

holy shit, with only a few exceptions, most of you people like HORRIBLE music. especially bondo's pop.

----fuckin awesome bands/albums----
smashing pumpkins - saimese dream, mellon collie and the infinite sadness
led zeppelin - physical graffiti
midnight oil - desiel and dust, blue sky mine
mr bungle - california
pink floyd - animals, wish you were here
jimi hendrix - axis bold as love, electric ladyland

----good bands/albums----
spacehog - resident alien
screaming trees - dust
weezer - the blue album, pinkerton
sunny day real estate - diary
nine inch nails - downward spiral
silverchair - frogstomp, neon ballroom
radiohead - ok computer, the bends
our lady peace - happiness is not a fish you can catch

hmm, thats all that comes to mind right now. id go sort through my collection for more, but its upstairs and im lazy.

----and a few generalizations----
classical - woot, the foundation of all other music. brain has this section covered.
jazz and blues - the base of all good rock.
punk - some of it is catchy, but it lacks depth... 2 minute thriller music.
rap, r&b and pop - this crap isnt even music. the level of talent needed to create this is so minimal compared to other genres. blarg.

Geek, beauty is in the ear of the beholder...pop music isn't bad...it is just something you don't like...just like I would say Eminem, NIN, and many other groups that some people like are absolute shit.

Wow... Either the good music hasn't hit the majority of you yet... or... something :)

To get pumped up or energetic I like:

Nirvana: Lithium

Audiovent: The Energy

Breakin Benjamin: (Their whole CD)

Eminem: lose Yourself, Hailey's song, The Way I am

Chevelle: The Red

Disturbed: Their CD "Believe"

TRUST Company: Their cd "Downfall"

LNKN Park: (Some.... songs...)

To mellow out: (this will be scary for some)

Green Day

Jon Mayer

Jim Croce Operator, Time in a Bottle, Bad Leroy Brown

before i let anyone else post on this topic, i want to put a stop to one rumor right now. i am tired of people making a generalization about a genre and saying that "it isnt music" or "it takes no talent." folks, all genres have their talented artists, and all genres have influenced the other genres as well. So geek usa, before you or anyone else goes around making these outragous claims, take a look at the music you listen to now. Geek USA, almost everyone on your list was influenced by James Brown, the greatest R&B artist of all time. jimi hendrix was as close to a blues guitarist as you are going to get in rock and roll- and R&B= rhythm and blues. rap was simply an iteration of r&b and blues that developed later. i can guarantee you that nine inch nails and radiohead were both influenced by george clinton, the father of modern rap, since he pretty much single handedly invented sampling and the music of both these artists is heavily-laden with samples and loops. and as far as "pop" music goes, that definition can be as broad as you want? under the definition of music as a whole (as compared to classical, jazz, etc), every single musician on your list is a pop artist. This post is not meant to start a debate over what is and isn't "music" because these points are not debatable. they are facts.
