Some software programs and such are authenticated through serial numbers - sharing them is akin to software piracy.
What serial number were you trying to get?

Don't waste your time poking around in the resource of the file, i guess if you really devoted yourself to cracking a program you could toy with the hex in the data fork, but still its all a waste of time.
As far as serial numbers go, i've seen a couple programs that contain a large list of them. however, most developers are catching onto it and with every update of the software your pirated serial number goes bad. if you did acually have a legit serial number, but upgraded it to a newer version and the serial number stoped working. You could do this,
go into the vers resource in res edit, and change the version back to the previous version number that could posibly work, or you could email or phone the developer depending on what company its from.
I understand that the so called Pirating software is a bad thing to do. I'm acually a computer science major in college. but yet i think that for a 13 year old kid to be using a pirated version of a good peice of software it could be benificial. A example would be photoshop, no13 year old, let alone a 17 year old could come up with the money to pay for it. But i learded photoshop at the ripe age of 12 because a family friend gave me a copy. I don't see how harm can be done with a piece of software you that you can't buy (because of finatial reasons). I'm planing on buying copys of Photoshop 7, and Studio MX off my educational discount because finaly i have enough money to use them legit. And if it wasn't for me using "pirated software" at a young age i wouldn't be devoting myself to a carreer in computers like i am now.
Pirating is bad in the senario of one office buying a copy of word and putting it on all the computers. Or if your distributing them over the internet on a broad scale.
Thats my philosophy behind software pirating.

Your not suppose to question the good things about mac. Because once you start telling them how great they are, they find some way to screw you over. (A perfect example is @mac.com)

Apple uses sn's for it's higher end software (Appleshare IP, OSX Server, WebObjects, etc). They just don't bother for the normal OS.

Considering that every machine apple sells comes pre-loaded with a copy of the OS that's not surprising.
But I have heard rumors that apple may start serial number in OSX soon. I hope not, that would just be too microsoft....

I partly agree. Pirating CAN be beneficial for YOURSELF, but if you take into consideration the companies and developers that spend their time and resources to create such great software, they deserve the money. That's why they release demos; Try before you buy.
Education discounts are a plus. What's even better is a job. Remember, you can always "borrow" your parents' credit card
