I know the oscars were 2 weeks ago, but I'm looking for something to distract me from matters of foreign policy. What changes do you think should have been made? What pictures should have won/been nominated that weren't?

In my opinion, "The Hours" was the best picture of the year. I saw all of the nominated pictures and was most moved by "The Hours". Also, "Far From Heaven" should have been nominated for best picture, and Julianne Moore should have won either best actress or best supporting actress. Another snub was the non-nomination of "City of God". Instead they nominated LOTR II which definetely did not deserve to be nominated, since it obviously isn't going to win any awards until the third installation.

I find that the academy is generally full of bullshit, giving out oscars for political reasons and snubbing great thespians and filmmakers that produce material too modern for their antiquated tastes. Cases in point include City of God and anything made by my favorite director Todd Solondz.

Also, what was up with Adrien Brody's kiss of Halle Berry? It was dashing, but she looked like she wanted to smack him.

City of God should have been nominated for Foreign Film probably, it is too much to hope that a foreign film win the big category.  I personally have heard great things about City of God (best gang film) but I don't much like really violent films so I'm passing on it...unless that fine woman on the cover (or perhaps it is the movie's poster) gets naked.  Grin

The only ones I've seen are Unfaithful (Best Actress nomination for Diane Lane)...she didn't deserve to be nominated for that piece of trash...and My Big Fat Greek Weding (Best Screenplay) which was ok but deserved not to win.  I had seen the tech movies like Star Wars, Spider Man, and Minority Report.  I also saw most of the animated nominees...I think, but I was hoping for Spirited Away and will be seeing that once it is out.

Right now my best movies of last year were Minority Report and 8 femmes (A french murder mystery that was excellent and had hot (but sadly fully clothed) females as well).  Although I suppose some of you won't see it because it is French *rollseyes*.  Mind you I have many many movies left to see (waiting for the DVD).

I might make an exception to my no-theatre rule to see Matrix in May.  Speaking of Oscar shafts, Matrix deserved to be nominated for Best Picture.

The Hours was a great movie, just saw it the other day, I didn't recognize Nicole Kidman in it until after 30 minutes, god damn make up job Smiley
I didn't see the Oscar awards and I don't watch a whole lotta movies so I'll leave it at that.

If someone stuck their gigantic shnozzle down my throat, I'd smack em.

How come no one mentioned anything about Chicago yet? Lemme see, probably because it was a fuckin piece of shit. Maybe it should have won "best musical" (unfortunately, thats not a category) instead of best everything else.

Just watched this and I agree.  I still have it behind Spirited Away and Minority Report overall, but it is best movie that is of a style that would get nominated for Best Picture.  A very touching and deep film.
