Ok this is a quick and simple on for you folks... i need help twisting the boss's arm:

simple deal. got a digitizing / editing / dvd authoring suite on the go... everything is great except the monitor - I'm working of the shittiest 17-inch office LCD known to man. the Res is crap, the stats suck

so i tried to persuade him to get a 20" apple display but the bugger said it was to much...

so i to find some similar monitors fast - decent res, no smaller than 19" and not costing the earth... any suggestions?

Try ViewSonic's line of monitors.  I looked at them before I purchased my Apple 20" Display (the only reason I went with the Apple is because it matches my G5 Tower).  Wink

I agree with GS - go with the ViewSonic.

They have this new lineup boasting 2MS response time: http://www.viewsonic.com/FastandFirst/vx.html

Not that you would see a differenct between 8MS and 2MS but it makes for good bragging rights.

Other than that, the pro series looks pretty sexy, you can probaly get them for cheaper than what they are listed on their website.  For the pro series you can get silver black or a monitor that rotates.

Also check out LaCie's LCD Displays: http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10016

They look pretty sexy too - not sure how much your boss is willing to pay but you can rave about the LaCie you have at home Wink.

hehe yeah me and my lovly LaCie... thing is i don't think i could fit two of these babbies on my desk at work hehe.

30MS response time? that's pretty high - probably won't notice it just doing graphical work - you might when processing film though I would think, a little thing called ghosting where objects seem to streak across the screen.

The big ViewSonic professional displays support High Def.

Can't go wrong with a big Viewsonic...or a high End LaCie.
IN fifteen years, ive worked on a TON of different monitors, and there was always a comfort level associated with Viewsonics and laCie...from their CRT offereings a few years ago up to todays LCD's.
99% of the higher end agencies I've worked with use them...

I myself spent $650 on a Sony sdm-hx93.
800:1 contrast ratio, and 25 ms. (never noticed ghosting, in my limited video experience)
(800:1 calibrates easier, and more consistently than 400:1, but I dont know how critical calibration is for you)-  Its a 19 inch..and of any of the monitors ive used, and put LOTs of hours in front of, its extremely easy on the eyes...easy to calibrate.  And considering the price, ive not noticed ANY difference between this and the Viewsonic hi-end. Im entirely happy.

Cant speak to Eizo's quality. In all the time ive been working in Agencies, Ive never seen one or heard of one. I only found two reviews for it, and it didnt stand out over the Viewsonic line.

I NEVER EVER EVER go with offbrand for work equipment mainly for the longevity variable..sure they make make good monitors..but for how long, and what is their suport like?  May be good, but I'm not a gambler.

I say LaCie or Viewsonic.
Price, durability, consistency, and support.

For slightly lower price, view specs on Sonys Line...(i think this one may be discontinued)

Yeah, all the good design agencies I know or have been to (for internships mainly) use big high-end LaCie TFTs, with hoods and calibrators. Great monitors, but VERY expensive (the 319 and 321 modells). Quality has its price, heh.

If you want a good screen get a Barco  Grin (very very expensive tho)

LaCie 321
- 21"
- Contrast ratio : 500:1
- Response Time : 20ms
- Price : $1,599.00

Viewsonic VP930b
- 19"
- Contrast ratio : 1000:1
- Response Time : 8ms
- Price : $559.00

For the price of one LaCie you can get 3 19" Viewsonics  Roll Eyes
I would go for 2 Viewsonics if I had to choose, more desk space and a higher contrast ratio which will help when editing dark parts in movies. The only thing that isn't so good with the Viewsonic is the resolution.

hehe thanks sent Smiley  Well i failed to persuade him to get a £450 Apple 20" apple display, so i think the LaCie's are kinda out the picture Wink

However we're working on the ViewSonic VX924 - good low latency, res could be better but i think this is the one. I can then put this shitty acer office monitor to the side and use it as a second screen for sticking my bins on etc

lovely... now all he has to do is buy the god damn thing!! Wink
