What are your two favorite novels?

1. "To Kill a Mockingbird", by Harper Lee (her only novel). I'm confident no one will disagree with me on this score.

2. "The five people you meet in heaven", by Mitch Albom. This best-selling American fable was published in 2003 and is truly an inspiration. A quote from the novel: "Fairness does not govern life and death. If it did, no good person would ever die young". I read "The five people..." in the wake of my grandmother's demise and have found it to be very comforting. As always, Albom's novels are short (200 pages and plus or minus 300 words per page), but they are beautifully crafted and simplistically poignant nonetheless. A must-read.

i don't read much fiction, but i'd have to say The Diving Bell And The Butterfly and The Life of Pi.

of course everyone's top 10 has Catcher In The Rye as well.

'The Life of Pi' is a great book. couldn't recommend it highly enough.
'The famished road' by ben Okri is another stunner, and if your open minded and looking for a big read go grab a copy!
and of course as beefy said.. 'to kill a mockingbird' is a classic.

I've also thoroughly enjoyed reading just about everything by Bill Bryson

Wow, two favorite books...I don't think I could narrow it down that much.  How about just my two favorite authors?  I think that would be Tom Clancy and Dale Brown.  After that I would say Clive Cussler, Jeffrey Archer, and John Grisham (a Mississippi native who I have met in person several times).

Five bucks says he has read them, but they aren't in his 'tops' list.

For me, having -just- (Ie: 45 seconds ago) completed The DeadZone, by Stephen King, I have to say that ranks right up there for me.  Right ahead of this book, is The Stand (unabridged version) and at the very top, the Gunslinger series.  Both (surprise) by King as well.  Maybe not grounded in real world, here-and-now issues, but all extremely good tales that I thoroughly enjoyed, and stayed up way too late reading on more than one occasion. 

There are many other books I heartily recomend, (like All Quiet, as Macuber mentioned), but when I saw the subject line, these three (well 9 really, since there are 7 in the Gunslinger series), came immediately to mind.

Yes, very good books.  I've actually read several thousand books in my life...including just about every book on war, wartime leader's and general's biographies and autobiographies, war strategy, and war reference books, as well as all the fictional stuff.  I love to read, just don't get nearly enough time to do it anymore.  Two of my favorite books on war are "The Hope" and "The Glory" by Herman Wouk.  They are historical fiction novels that cover the entire period of the creation of Israel and the war of 1948 through the late 1970's/early 1980's.

Lone-Wolf, have you by any chance read King's "The Body"? I have actually read the novel after I saw the film, which appeared in 1986 under the title "Stand by Me" and in which Richard Dreyfuss (the adult Gordie Lachance) stars alongside River Phoenix (Chris Chambers). Anyway, it's a terrific read, wouldn't you say?

That's actually one of my least faveorite books I've ever read... not one part in that book gets exciting, except when the kid gets beat up in the hotel room.

1. The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien, most people I've talked to who have read this book found it to be pretty bad because the story is sortof half fiction and half non-fiction. I loved it, it's one of those books that makes me want to read until I've finished the book. Plus I like Tim O'Brien as an author.

2. Canoeing with the Cree - Eric Severeid, A great true story of two boys who make a conoe trip from Minneapolis to northern canada (2,250 miles) The main reason I like it is because of the story... not as much of liking the writing.

On the Road is good, but I didn't think it was as amazing as everyone seems to think. The guys just a bum, and he doesn't learn anything by the end of the book. Maybe it resonated when it was written, but now it strikes a false note with me.

Anna Karenina is one of my favorites, and some of my favorite authors include brett easton ellis, richard russo and david sederis. I just finished "Dress Your Family in Cordaroy and Denim" and it was fucking hilarious. On a more serious, fucked up note, I highly recommend Brett Easton Ellis' "Less Than Zero"(He's the guy who wrote American Psycho)
