You see those colleges on TV commercials. The ones do it from home. Those yes... others..... maybe.

Most colleges will lay out their required classes you have to have taken in highschool (like taking a year of chemistry, for Western Washington U)  and other general classes like that.  In addition, if you do enough digging, you can find an admissions index for each college, which allows you to plug in your highschool GPA and SAT scores, and give you a rough idea of what chance you have of getting into the college.

Im fairly certain there is a college you can get into with that GPA, just dont pin your hopes on Princeton or Harvard quite yet.

Yeah there are a lot of schools you can get into with those grades. But also you have to take into account SAT scores, athletics, the prestige of yor highshchool, Im sad to say it but race plays a part in it.  I graduated with a 2.9 but I did good on the SAT, I also went to a 1337 private school  and I got into UNLV where Im currently getting a 4.0 . I was worried, just like you are, that I was fucked and would have to go to communnity college, but if you look you'll find a good school.  Oh and it helps if you have a lot of cash, because when it all comes down to it, that's a big part of the reason why the school exists.

Shut up myst, you're from canada.
SK, its fine to have a 2.8, as long as your test scores are good, and you have some good extra curiculars(sports, art, theater community service, etc) There are plenty of people going to good colleges that got your grades, or worse. You just have to know how to present yourself right. Show them your strongest and most appealing trait, if they question your grades, be sorry, say you want to really try in college or some bullshit like that. Don't worry about it man, community college is not where you are going.

Stupid question from an outsider: what the hell is a community college and why is it worse than other colleges!?

Community Colleges are usually 2-year colleges designed to get you your Associates Degree and also to provide a low-cost way of getting you started in college before moving up to a regular 4-year college.  It allows a lot of people who didn't have the grades to get a scholarship, or the money to go to a 4-year college, a way to get their basic coursework out of the way before moving up and getting started on whatever they are going to major in.

It's not that they are any worse than a regular 4-year college, they just don't generally have the "prestige" of the bigger universities.

I graduated with a 2.8, did shitty on the SAT and ACT however I was accepted by Central Michigan University which required a 3.5 or something.  If you want to live away from home, which is really fun (besides shitty food), I would apply for local colleges where you can actually live on campus.  If you have your sites set higher for a big school, spend a year or two there, get the grades up and then transfer to where you really want to study.

The only other choice is a community college.  However, usually half of your classes will not transfer from there, causing you to be a second year freshman at the college you transfered to.  Oh, and you'll be living at home. There's nothing wrong with living at home, except that you'll be trying to adjust, with living away when you do transfer while others your age are in their second year, as opposed to living away in your first semester of college while everyone is in the same boat.
