Ok I've been meaning to post about this for a while, but as you may or may not know, I'm a proud member of NAP (National Association of Procrastinators). Anyway, a while back I reformatted my computer, because I was freezing constantly in OSX, etc. Well, the problem was solved, but I only decided to install OSX at the time. Eventually I upgraded to Panther, and then some time after that, I decided that I wanted to reinstall OS9.

Every single time I started up from the OS9 install disk, my computer froze when it got to the desktop.

What can I do...

 Huh

I think i can help ya with that one... Sounds very much like when you re-formatted your HD You didn't install the OS9 Drivers - the HD will not be able to install the system withoutem... Id suggest installing 9 on a exteranl HD and just checking the comp boots from it - then back up and re-format your HD with the 0S9 Drivers Smiley

When I got my new eMac, I realized that it only had 10.3 and Classic.  I have some program that will not run properly in Classic, so I tried to install OS9 just the way I had it before.  Well, after a long discussion with the boys over at Apple, 10.3 does not allow you to install OS9 at all.  I guess this is their way of phasing it out but it still leaves me in the dust.  I have noticed however that Classic is constantly being improved and have been able to run those programs through there.  If you absolutely need OS9 and not Classic, I would recommend partitioning your hard drive so that one partition has OSX, and the other has OS9.  I'm not sure how or if this can be done.  Also, I'm not sure how to set up an external HD for a different OS.

Gyah...i hate trying to install OSs backwards...maybe there's a reason for this...

Yeah all new mac HD's wont have the os9 drivers on them - apple has totally fazed os9 out of the picture as much as possible...

IF you really really don't want to have to re-initalize your HD etc, go out and buy a small second HD - either internal or external to run os9 on... My main system is 10.3 on a 200Gb drive, then a second internal 80GB for files and work.. the first external 120Gb is for backup, and the 2nd 120GB has a copy of OS9 on it, and i use for shifting files about etc and for work in progress...

Internal HD's are pittence these days - you can pick up a 80internal for under $80 im sure.

I decided that I wanted to reinstall OS9.

OMG....why on earth would you WANT to?  lol

I deleted crappy OS9 and all of its associated files the day I bought my new G5.....and I have lived in the glory of OSX ever since.

I have seen the light.....I have seen the light.....there is NOTHING better than OSX!

Indeed GS... However unfortunatly there are still some apps that are either non OSX or are just old and nolonger developed...

I still have to have a copy of OS9 for the Apple QTVR Authoring suit. I can't afford the alternatives at the moment and i still prefer the way that apple managed the process.. so horrible as it is, classic still has to get booted up now and then!!

Yeah, I know some people have to still use it for certain applications, BFG.  I might actually have left it on my computer if I could have booted into OS9....but NOOOOO.....Apple had to make it where a G5 can only run Classic.....sorry, I'm not into the emulation game.

And I know why SNiPE was disgusted at the thought of re-formatting his hard drive.  It makes me feel sick to think I would ever have to re-format a Macintosh Hard Drive.  I've owned Macs since 1984 and I have yet to EVER format a Mac Hard Drive....yes, they are just that good!  Of course it helps that I buy a new Mac every 6 months....lol

Which reminds me.....just when are the speed-bumped G5's comming out???  I want one I want one I want one!!!

...10.3 does not allow you to install OS9 at all.
