I have to say I feel kicked in the sac by Apple. I stupidly took advantage of the Refrub Single G5 1.8. It arrived yesterday and was dead out of the box. Its been a long time since I've gotten that pissed at an inanimate object, as I nearly launched the gigantic tower out the window. I took it to the Apple Store and its covered by warranty, but I still feel betrayed by Apple. Check out the apple G5 forums under Support , you'll find numerous issues with the single 1.8, I wish I would have known this before I ordered the piece of shit, but hopefully it will come back in functional condition.

Yikes, I hope there isn't anything wrong with the single 1.8 G5 (I thought Apple came out with the dual 1.8 a little pre-maturely).  I havn't had any problems with mine yet, so I hope I didn't get a lemon in the long run.

It wasn't prematurely, apple never should have made the single 1.8ghz g5. Not to many people bought them to begin with, because it was an extra 400$ on 200mhz, pci-x, and 4 more slots for ram compared to the 1.6ghz. And it wasn't anything near the dual 2ghz machine in terms of power.

The single 1.8 was a nice machine before the dual came out. Compared to the 1.6, it has faster memory, PCI-X, and more room for RAM. Also, Apple was able to sell a bunch of dual 2's to people like myself who wanted a new PowerMac but would only go for a dual processor machine.

I will get the G5 1.8 single for arround 1800 EUR - and later I will buy a ATI 9800PRO for it. that makes  1800 + 500 = 2300

The only prob w/ getting the 9800 pro not from apple (installed when youi get your mac) is that the apple supplied 9800 is a 8x agp port card.... the one you get afterwards in a 4x agp port card.. I have had several places tell me that the 9800 pro (that they sell) in not compatible in the G5 fully yet b/c of this. If you dont mine waiting till ATI upgrades the 9800pro to support 8xagp.. then get the nvidia ir 9600,, if you mind waiing get the 9800 (this alsi holds true w/ getting the 9600 from a dealer other then it intalled in your camp when you get it)

now diff dual v single... Ghostsniper has a single and i have the dual g5's.. i have niticed that mine is a touch faster.. I load programs a little faster then ghost does.. other thn that i have not realy had the chance to compare them yet.

I think that the DUAL for 1.8 is useless for the most ppl.

They should have done 2 version of 1.8. the Sigle and Dual.

Most ppl dont need the Dual, but for those who need one, they would have done an alternative.

The guys at xlr8yourmac have tested the OEM Radeon 9800 and the Retail 9800 Pro, and have noticed no difference between them, despite the retail one only being a AGP 4x card. Link: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G5/Retail9800_vs_BTO_9800.html

AGP 4 or 8 this is not a quation, b/c it doesnt give u any speedup!

B/c AGP 1 already has enough bandwith for most common games - the limit in former days was the RAM, it was expensive, so Companies developed a fast way ( AGP ) to transfaire DATA form RAM into GPU. They edvanced the AGP port. But with big amount of RAM on Grafkscards there is no more a need for AGP8 or even 4.

There is no game on the market that fully needs the AGP4.

PS: There are really some Apps that need AGPm but this arent games, and those APs noone of us will ever use.
Also, when you try to test the diffrence between the Speed u get out.
There will be like 0,1 - 0.5 % between AGP 2 and 8 - alsthough AGP 8 has more Bandwith. The Bottleneck is the GPU and it RAM.

Harvey it was nothing against you.

I just added here some info ABOUT the AGP Fake!  And that a GPU with with more fast RAM is better then a less RAM and higher AGP.

ALSO a better GPU with less RAM is better then a slower GPU with more RAM.
