Where is the knowledge we lost with information?

« on: January 09, 2004, 09:07:58 pm »

Well I got my 10 GB iPod for xmas(stfu I never wanted a mini one) and well last night some stuff just stopped working/not working well. The main thing is my backlight no longer works. It seems just to bold the text but the buttons don't light up and either does the screen. Then during one song my iPod started skipping. I tried wiping it then putting the songs back on but that didn't work. Any advice you could lend me? Or should I just go to the genius bar in the apple store?

If resetting it didnt work (holding down the menu/play buttons), and youre feeling kind of adventurous, you could use a few guitar picks (yes, theyre the best tool to do this) to carefully pry apart the metal backing from the rest on the top, bottom, and one side (so you can tilt it off the other side) and disassemble your ipod completely, unplug the battery, wait a minute, plug it back in, and reassemble. This does work sometimes, but youll prolly void your warranty in the process. Id go to the genius bar in the westchester, but theyre prolly going to be gay and tell you what they told me "we only service the first gen ipods, for the rest, call applecare" So you could save yourself the trouble, and call applecare, who will send you an empty box to put it in, and theyll either fix it or mail you an unscratched refurbished one in two or three days.

just noticed i was too late. Oh well.

I also got a 10gig ipod for xmas and although I havnt seen any of the problems that hazard has I have noticed the battery not holding its charge. I charged it completely and left on a 2 day ski trip. My ipod fully charged suppose to last 10hours of play. So I unpluged it, shut it down and locked it. Once I got to the ski slopes the next day and set my ipod up and ready to head downhill I noticed that my ipod was only at half charge. I was like, wtf!! So my ipod lasted only about 4 hours that day. My grip is if the ipod is fully charged, and shut down, It shouldnt loose so much battery charge in so little time.

Anyone else notice battery issues?

apple recommends you to "initialize" your ipods battery once. you can do that by fully charging it, then let it play until the battery is depleted, and then charging it again.

As for the draining of the battery that is a good idea, just make sure that you only do it once.  the issue with the Ipod is that it uses a Lithium Battery.  Not a Ni-cad.  Some people think that if you can drain it once, that you can do it over and over again, and that is good for the battery.  In fact it is the opposite effect.  You should always keep the battery at full charge when not using it, or as much as possible.  The more it hits the empty area, the more likely it is to have an issue with the charge of the battery sooner then later.  So definitely make sure you always keep a good charge on the battery.

Another issue is when people let the Ipod turn off by itself.  by doing this it slowly drains the battery for some reason.  The only way an Ipod should be turned off is actually by holding the play button down.  This will ensure the Ipod is shut down and will not drain the battery in the meantime.  It's strange how it was setup like that but be assured it will save your battery life by just holding down the play button to shut it off.

Yeah i have been doing some reading up about these batteries and like sab said it really does seem that it it is best to keep the pods batterys as full as my stomach right now. - Hence the design of the dock - when your not using it you put it in the dock and it charges....
