Hi all, I was reading through the MacNN Forums, just for the hell of it, when I stumbled apon a topic of intrest. Read the topic here:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155005

To carry it over to this forum for the fun of it, what do you people think. Personally I think all those who think about going back to "Macintosh" should be burned at the stake.

The G#s do seem to be dragging on. Perhapes something they will revert to PPC 970?? Those other sugestions were rediculous, who the hell woudl by a Xstation?!:o

Don't be shy, step up and share your opinions like we all know you can.  Cheesy

I think it will be the PowerMac 970, with an outside chance of being the PowerMac G5. There could also be a 64 tacked on at the the end. It should be Power to keep with certain traditions. It is a PowerPC, thus Powermac. Apple has branded iComputer for their consumer line, PowerComputer for their professional line, and XComputer for their server line.

I voted PowerMac 970, because the G5 should be like the 'ULTIMATE' macintosh... 970 is not worthy  Grin

I'm tired of being creative.

« Reply #4 on: April 21, 2003, 05:03:15 am »

Way to show creativity guys.  This is Apple we're talking about - only the most innovative computer company - or arguably any company lately.

The 970 is new.  Hopefully it will be something to reinvigorate the Apple line.  Thus, Apple is going to put their heads together and come up with something outside the scope of a message board posting someone thought of in 5 seconds.  At least, I hope so.

I'd like to see something without an X, a Power, or boring numbers.  Surely a company as brilliant as Apple can think different and be as original as "pentium".

Loud, there is a difference between not showing creativity and putting things in context. The biggest difference between a G4 and a 970 is 32 bit vs 64 bit. It is still the same architecture and basically the same vector instruction set. This isn't a big enough change to warrant messing with the current branding they have established.

Besides, there is an elegance inherent to the simpistic name PowerMac. Apple has never had to resort to using flashing names like Pentium.

Just out of the blue, do you think Apple will ever offer a purebred  "Gaming Machine"?

That answer could either be a definitive "Yes" or a "Not a chance in hell" depending on how you look at things. Apple will never market its computers primarily as gaming machines. Games are just too small a market and a good Mac can do so much more. On the other hand, if when they release the 970 they bump it to AGP 8x, the Radeon 9800 (or whatever is the shiznit at that point), and upgrade the mobo, it will mop the floor with gaming x86's.

Hopefully, Ace, because when I read that the new Pentium4 FSB800 3Ghz reaches 193fps in Ghost Recon with all details on high at 1600*1200 I have to say I miss something and that most macs in Game Ranger doesn't reach 60fps with low details and no shadows.

Nobody needs such high framerates but at least 60fps  under all circumstances(tons of enemies firing, huge game areas...) would be great, sniff.

970 I don't care what your name will be but be FAST and FASTER  Wink

970 Release/Specs

Mauti, the 970 has a 900 MHz FSB. Also, since that press release, they announced that they had the 970 running at 2.5 GHz. If they can make everything else equal (namely the video card and AGP), the 970 would make the Pentium suck its PPC cock.

The gap may finally close! I thought since it was thought to be released  in the macs during the second half of 2003...err this year, who thinks it will be at WWDC?

Maybe they could call it the Power Macin5years.  Cheesy
Of Course by then pcs will likely be at 7.5 ghz and AMD will own Intel.

Seriously though as much as there is to hope for in this new chip I'm getting tired of apple and its chip makers simply saying they have new chips that will dramatically change the mac.  Wasn't it late last year when they were talking about the power4 from IBM?  Of course mac users are just as guilty when we try to make any annoucement seem like it is the next big thing. Sad

Now if they can actually show something for hype I'm all for it, but as Mauti's ghr fps show macs are drastically far behind and not just for games.  For thought: how many macs get over 100 fps in ghr, and if so at what settings.

What will they call it, oh maybe g5,  Apple has tried to simplify naming conventions over the past few years.

Yes, we were talking about a modified Power4 late last year. The 970 is this toned down version of the Power4. IBM and Apple have been doing well, but Motorola gives the whole deal a bad rep. They have fucked up the G4 evolution, and they don't care anymore.
