is there a way to run a headless ghr server?

basically i want to run a ghr server on a machine and NOT have the machine follow into the 3d world -- i want to take that cpu/gpu pressure OFF the server machine. i don't care if it's technically "headless" -- i can stay in a game menu or whatever, i just don't want the server to draw the 3d world.
sorry if i missed a simple answer in my searching.
oh -- and do all of us experience the fps counter drawing, eg, "1024x768x16" -- 16 being the number to focus on -- when we have chosen 32 bits in prefs? is this a bug or a sign i'm doing something wrong?
thanks.

I can't help you with the 16/32 bit question, but I was searching for a way to run a dedicated (which happens to be headless) server the other day, and found an answer. This is for the Mac version, of course. Just place a folder named "run-server" (no quotes, as always) in the folder with the Ghost Recon application. When you start GhR, it will be in dedicated server mode, which as far as I know, only displays the server screen.

Mac Ghost Recon doesn't come with dedicated server support from the CD? On a PC, you just activate the Dedicated server and it runs "headless" if you choose.

This might sound silly, but what exactly is a dedicated server?

It's a way to set up a computer so that all it's doing is hosting. Not playing the game, not doing anything else. It's just sitting there and being a host. It's intended to be used to set up a host which will stay up more or less constantly so that people can just join and play anytime.

I would also recommend running GhR in a window while running it in dedicated server mode. Go to options.xml and change FULLSCREEN to FALSE. This will minimize CPU/GPU use as much as possible. I can host a 36 player game easily on a G4 450 MHz with 1 GB RAM using this setup.

I just tried this, thanks. It really cuts down on the redraw time etc. I'd been wondering how to do this (since there isn't an option to do this like in MOHAA). Cheers.

DK - is your (options/graphics) "Z-buffer depth" the same as your resolution in terms of bit depth? My Fps counter drawing is the same as what it chosen, so making sure they're both the "same bit" may be your solution.
