Lead...Follow, or Get The Hell Out Of The WAY!! ?

« on: March 04, 2002, 07:36:02 pm »

- March 4, 2002 - Ubi Soft? Entertainment, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, today announced plans to develop and publish the next installment of the best-selling Rainbow Six series of games with Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield. Ubi Soft will release Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield on the PC in the fall of 2002, with the Xbox? version of the game soon to follow.

Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield is the sequel to the immensely popular Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six?: Rogue Spear, 2000 Action Game Of The Year, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six?, 1999 Action Game Of The Year*. It will be the third game in the Rainbow Six line, which has sold more than 6.7 million copies worldwide.

The Rainbow Six franchise is known for its action-packed game play and heart-stopping realism, and Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield will continue the tradition. Developed by Ubi Soft's Montreal studio, in close collaboration with Red Storm Entertainment, Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield features a brand new Tom Clancy storyline in which Team RAINBOW is led all over the world in a string of dramatic operations. The game will utilize graphics technology provided by the next-generation Unreal? engine to power 15 new single-player missions that include the discovery of a cache of biological weapons and stopping an armed gang from terrorizing a London bank.

"Fans have been pleading with us for a long time to come out with another chapter in this blockbuster series of games, and Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield will be worth the wait," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubi Soft Entertainment Inc. "The secrecy behind this project has been crucial to the evolution of the game. We'll be ready to unveil all the action at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May."

I just know this engine will be able to handle a proper DTD sized weapon texture, hmmm how about 800X600? lol A long time to wait... Guess I'll have to keep modding RS... Grin

Relax. Breathe. Focus on the reticle, not the target. Don't make the shot happen. Let the shot happen.

I have taken the liberty of doing a little background research on the Unreal 2 game engine. Not to get anybody's hopes cranked up too high, but, based upon the features of other current/developmental games using this engine, some of the features supported by this game engine include(but are not limited to..):
1)Operable vehicles
2)Very detailed character models with waving hair, moving expressions, etc.
3)Skeletal animations
4)particle effects such as smoke that reacts to the passage of projectiles and figures.
5)Flame effects.
6)water splash, ripple and wave effects such as generated by a wading/swimming figure.
7)Large, detailed maps
8)A high degree of environmental interaction.

This is not a comprehensive list and is by no means meant to imply that these features will be supported in RS3.  But they'd be fools not to.  Start bugging Ubisoft NOW!

Based on what I've seen so far, this could be a very exciting development for R6/RS/UO players.

I'm staying positive but it can go either way. I hope they preserve the integrity of the game, and let's hope they don't basically make an UNREAL mod out of it. I played thru Unreal, it's a cool game, but lacks realism. Graphicaly, it's superior, but the mechanics of it are just like halflife or counterstrike. I don't want to see the gun sticking out in front of me or be able to jump superhigh, that's stuff I hope they take into account... I have a feeling that R6-3 is meant to battle with countrestrike, but I hope not. Modding for that engine is a lot simpler in many ways and there are more tools to use, but for us modders, don't expect any similarities with the current R6 games as far as modding goes! Still, there are a lot more things that can be done. Shit, there's a rally racing MOD for halflife, you'd never know it was a FPS engine. SO let's hope Redstorm lays down the law with respect to the game's feel and integrity!

Check this out:

(Already thinking about the "We Were Soldiers" mod for RS3. Let me see now.. need 359 Cav troopers, about ten gazillion NVA and  a map of the Central Highlands. Yep, that oughta just about do it.)
