"Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers said backers of the amendment, which has the strong support of President Bush, were struggling to line up even a simple majority of 51 senators on their side. They need at least 60 votes to cut off debate and 67 votes to approve the amendment."

And here's the obituary for this steaming pile of Republican bigotry.

"The Senate dealt an election-year defeat Wednesday to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, rejecting pleas from President Bush and fellow conservatives that the measure was needed to safeguard an institution that has flourished for thousands of years.

The vote was 50-48, 10 short of the 60 needed to keep the measure alive."

It was a ridiculous amendment that would've destroyed the limits on the federal government and brought government even more into the control of our lives. We don't need a nanny state, we need freedom - and part of that freedom is to get rid of state marraiges all together!

I reversed the numbers -- it got 48 FOR, 50 AGAINST.
