I also always remember D-Day as it is my father's birthday, June 6. It is kinda sad this year with the death of President Reagan.

I would think it's pretty sad every year...considering the huge loss of life...not really a happy day.

Watched the proceedings from France live at about 2am...got a very erry feeling listening to Chirac and Bush tell stories of events that happened 60 years ago. Rather than happy, I feel a better word to use is Commemorate.
On a side note, I hope that Chirac and Bush weren't throwing up a facade and that they are truely committed to smoothing over their differences, thus patching up our oldest alliance.

they were 10 years ago, but german chancelor Kohl declined frenc President Mitterand's invitation.
Anyway, it was a day to pay respect to all the soldiers who died fighting against Hitler's madness.

I would not say that it turned the tide of WWII (credits to El Alamein and Stalingrad for that job), but it did open the Western front, thus giving the West influence over economically powerful Western Europe during the Cold War.
I hope I'm not making a debate.

Id defiantly have to debate that
it forced hitler to spread his power to protect a new front, i personally think that the invasion at Normandy did trigger the turn, as it considerably weakened the german concentration of force

The American entry into the war. Period.

Well, I was looking at a more specific battle, such as the invasion, that crippled the Germans. Any ideas?
