Alright, since this is a gossip forum, and others have posted spam-like e-mail here, I figured I would contribute something I read today.  I have no clue if it's true, but I guess it's worth looking into since I have a Super Target down the road from me that I frequent when the Super Wal-Mart is out of stock on an item I wanted.

Like I said, I have no clue if it's true.  So... if anyone can prove or disprove this, by all means, please contribute, but please do so in an informative way.  "This is absolute horse pussy!", is probably not a very good response, nor does it prove or disprove anything.  I'm just as curious as many of you out there whether this is true or not.

by Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans
Association

Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event. We received the following reply from the local TARGET management: "Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education."  So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans in general do not meet their donation criteria, then something is really wrong at  this TARGET store. We were not asking for  thousands of dollars, not even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a memorial remembrance. As a follow-up, I e-mailed the TARGET U.S.  corporate headquarters and their response was the  same. That's their national policy.  Then I looked into the company further. They will  not allow the Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And during the recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of employees who were called up for active duty to continue their insurance coverage while they were on military service. Then as I dig further, TARGET is a French-owned corporation.  Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET can not support American Veterans, then why should I and my family support their stores by spending our hard earned American dollars and to have their profits sent to France. Without the American Vets, where would France be today?  Feel free to pass this along to whomever you want.

In other news, who cares. You already shop at Wal Mart, meaning you are a dipshit anyway.

Why would anyone be a dipshit for shopping at Wal-Mart?  Hell, I just bought a 200 pack of Sony CD-R's for $14.95.  I don't know about you, but that aint a bad deal.  No mail in rebates, and no online ordering.  Perhaps you're a dipshit for not shopping there?  I think they are also the biggest retailer in the world.  They must be doing something right.  Tasty thoughts, aren't they? Wink

Mark my words.  Wallmart will be facing anti-trust suits within 5 years.  I'm all for capitalism, don't get me wrong, but Wallmart's power over it's suppliers is going to start driving some large suppliers out of business.  When that happens a few times, and people are out of jobs because of it, you'll see Microsuck trials version 2.0.

On another note.  I know Dayton-Hudson used to own Mervyns and Target.  Not a French company.

I also know that Target did support Toys for Tots here (I donated there).

One last point.  Please check out this web page talking about how this is a fake spam e-mail.

I don't actually have anything against wallmart (don't have much for them either).  But this was just someone's BS to try to hurt Target, nothing more.

Wal-Mart is the bastard child of Capitalism. It's like Microsoft, only with good intentions. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Wal-Mart's main goal is to lower prices to their absolute lowest levels possible. An admirable goal I must say, captialism at it's finest, or is it?

Like Bucc said, it uses it's monopoly power to force it's suppliers into bankruptcy. Now obviously that's not their main goal, but in order to achieve the low prices Wal-Mart demands, many suppliers see their profit margins shrink to nothing. This forces American corporations to look overseas for manufacturing. Which means lost American jobs. Which is bad for the economy.

For a detailed discussion of how exactly it is that low prices are bad for the American economy, read this article: http://fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html

I don't really see how Wal-Mart is any better, or with better intentions than microsuck. they're both after the same thing: control of their respective markets in order to make a shit load of money. Microsoft went about it in some dubious ways, Wal-Mart is no different. Recently there have been a slew of articles about how mirgrant workers are mis treated by wal mart, locked into the store at night, paid below minimum wage. While microsoft wants to sell us computers, wal mart wants to sell us everything else under the sun, and both are willing to go outside of the lines to get it.

There are so many cheap-ass stores in the US, I hate it, I like small stores with good service a hell of a lot more than I like big "storage-stores", and I gladly pay the difference in price.

Gee Kami, and we don't have small stores with good servers here do we?  Just cheap ass stores, eh?  Thanks for lumping the whole USA into one shit-can and dumping on it again.  Really getting tired of it.

Ever think that maybe having the choice over which type of store to go to was a better option then either extreme?

Omg Bucc, I did NOT say that, I just said there were A LOT of cheap ass stores, I didn't say there was ONLY cheap ass stores, why do you think everything I say is against America?

As long as both options are available, sure.

Hey, ya know, I checked over at Target's site for a half hour looking for something like this.  Thanks for finding it for me.  I figured it wasn't true, but since I had no knowledge either way, I learned something from bringing it to this forum.  w00t!

Every place that I have lived in the USA has had more of the small stores and less of the big ones.  Big stores like Wallmart, Home Depot, Lowes and the SAM's clubs are relatively new.

So where don't you have the option?

We had a thread about Wal-mart and their price controls in the leet Black ops section. Maybe we can pull it out or something. As for Wal-mart and target, I prefer to support local companies even if its a little more. By doing this you keep the charecter of the city you live in and you keep the wealth spent at the stores within your area making the standard of living in your area better. For groceries and all that jazz I go to a little store thats been around in Austin for 120 years. For music I dont go to Sam Goody but to some place called Waterloo Records e.t.c. It may be a bit more, but as I said earlier, it keeps the city's persona. Infact the city has a whole alliance of local buisnesses that are helping to stave off some of this commercialism. We got Wal-mart to stop building a store over here. This isnt anti-captialism, it just a creative solution to combat these large corporations. Take a look at this site and maybe you can try to copy what we are doing down here in your towns.

Now I know some of you dont live in big cities with alot of independently run buisnesses like I do (not putting anyone down but if you live in a small town, chances are you cant get what you need just from local stores). I just wish Americans would appreciate their regional identities a little bit more. It adds spice to the personality of a nation.
