They wouldn't dare...

Apparently some people have decided that they are going to storm MacWorld San Francisco because of defected iBooks and iPods. Sons of bitches. Don't you dare stop the world from seeing some 3 ghz g5's (a.k.a. a single 1.6 G5 price dropper... a.k.a. a new computer for me?)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone can give me some more info on the problematic ipods i would much appreciate it... A few months back i forked out for a very beatifull 40GB ipod... its wonderful, i have all my inportant data backed up, my libaray (on my mac not books Wink ) , 14 days worth of music and enough space for the odd film in prgress etc.. However about 4 weeks ago i first heard about the "life span of the ipod"... People claiming that after 18months their pods were packing up and would not either charge or hold power?

Ok... this freaked the living daylights out of me. I didn't empty my wallet just to ahve this thing for 18 months... please someone tell me that only 1 in a million ipods are affected... go on. please tell me..

well, i think that civil disobidence should be confined to more important matters.
i know that i had one of the original 5gb iPods, right when they came out. it survived over a year, and was dropped numerous times on concrete, and cobblestones. In fact, the only reason it died is because i foolishly plugged it into an old imac dv, which didnt have ipod software, causing some sort of bug in the machine which makes the hard drive spin up, and then stop, and then repeat. all in all, i was impressed with how durable my pod was. the case had nicks and dents, and it was fine
this whole ibook thing is worrying tho...i just got an ibook g4, i hope i dont have problems with mine....

Apple offers a battery replacement program for $99. There's no way to lower that price cause iPod batteries are so tied into the Pod. Look at it this way, all batteries are bound to die, my brothers recharable batteries in his logitech mouse died awhile back. Technology isn't perfect, 18 months is 1.5 years. iPod remain the best selling music player the 10,20, and 40 are all in the top 5 best selling (the 10 being the best seller).

1. 10GB iPod ($299)
 2. 128MB Digitalway ($140)
 3. 20GB iPod ($399)
 4. 128MB iRiver ($119.99-$139.99)
 5. 40GB iPod ($499)

When you see that a 128 Megabyte player costs $140 then you see a 10 Gig iPod for only $299, you see that iPods aren't over expensive, they're pretty cheap for the size. I don't think the battery dying is worth the attention, I've heard of many who say they've stilll got original iPods without any battery problems. It probably depends on care and use. I you use the iPod til the battery is out then recharge it you probably will lower the lifespan. If you keep it charged you'll probably get a nice long life with it.

Just compare you cellphones batterylife to a iPod. Don't return it, it's the best of the best and tons of fun.

I have a old 10GB iPod. Still works like a dream. Must be 2 years or more old by now. Still get my 7 hours or so out of it.

The best thing you can do to make the battery last as long at it can is to only charge it when the battery is fully de-charged and then recharge it then. Rather than charging it ever 5 mins which will make the battery last far less time.

As for the ibook I haven't had any problems with it either.

I was thinking about doing the same, Snipe, I know everyone says the best deal is the dual 1.8, but I just don't think I could afford 3 G's+, max i would wanna spend on a comp is 2000. I would need a screen and everything.

lets hope so.. its so nice to be able to try and watch it via the University Connection rather than via 56k modem  Grin

Thanks for the link Spetsnaz there is also a decent bit of info here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61434

Im rather curiouse about the battery issue though... when not in use my iPod tends to sit in its dock - asleep and charging it's batterys... Im just pondering whether or not it would be better to only recharge the batter when it has complely drained or whether this constant 'topping up' is healthy for it or not...
Although i can't imagine apple designing it this way if it was an issue!

Cheers

Is there not a warranty on the iPod? Like a year or something?

actualy that is quit opposite... If you recharge it alot b4 it is all the way dead you creat a memory in the batt. wich causes it not to recharge all the way. I have worked w/ 2 way radios for over 8 yrs (ham radio operator and also a dealer for a while) this happend to the recargble batts in the handheld 2 way radios often. the newer technology in batt makes this less likely to hhappen but it still can.

Like i said.. newer tech says that its less likely to happen.. does not mean it wont.... I just takes longer for it to happen in most cases.
