The game is awesome, an excellent blend of R6, RS, and GR. Unfortunately, you guys wont be able to play it for another couple years.

Once UT2003 is avaible for Mac - Raven Shield should follow fast. Maximum 1 year behind PC.

One wonders if the publishers of these games took any business classes in college. If you release the port simultaneously with or shortly after the original version, then you don't have to spend money on advertising for the port (or at least, not very much money) because you've already made the potential customers aware of the game with your advertising for the original. Ah, well. Porting should be a lot more common, for a variety of reasons, and it's not.

I agree with that Mauti...it all depends when they can successfully port the new unreal warfare graphics engine.

Anyway, this game requires essentially brand new hardware (unlike Ghost Recon) because it is a giant memory, processor, and graphics hog.

Double post, just saw Lothario.

Nope, that is a sham. Odds are that they would spend more time and money getting a Mac game to be successfully ported without knowing whether or not the game would be a hit on PC. It is cheaper and easier to launch the PC version to see if it is successful, then grant a license to a porting company to make the game for the Mac. Almost no game is a guaranteed hit besides the Blizzard games, and they only release copies on a hybrid disk because they want to keep the code within the company and to better manage the game for online play on Battle.net

Also, it is generally the porting company doing the bulk of the advertising, with the publisher only advetising to sell more games and make more off of royalties.

Porting costs a trivial amount relative to the cost of creating a modern game. I've never been able to find solid figures, but I've read various amounts in articles. The amounts that I've read have all been in the low six-figure range (somewhere between 150K and 350K, maybe 500K once or twice), but even if a porting agreement costs a million dollars, that's less than 10% of the total cost of the game. I've harped on the relative cheapness of porting before, and again now, because porting is a proposition where (unless your game sucks amazingly) you're almost guaranteed to make a profit. Making a profit on the tens of millions initial cost is not guaranteed, but making a profit on an outlay of under a million dollars doesn't require a huge number of copies to be sold. It's a smaller total amount of profit, but even so, profit is profit.

You're right, the porting companies handle the advertising. My point was badly stated. I meant that if the port is accomplished soon after the release of the original, that the target audience will likely still remember the advertising for the original. That doesn't mean that the porting company doesn't have to advertise; but it could mean that less advertising will accomplish the goal.

I was reading Inside Mac Games website, and they said UT 2003 will be released for mac "Very soon". That and it being playable at the last Mac World, I will bet on march-april release. Though I won't be able to run it, I'm just waiting for the new processor...

On the processor subject, on MacNN they say it will be released during the second half of this year. I think I'll be able to hold out til then... Wink

I've played the demo quite a bit on PC and it's awesome! Probably the best cqb game i've ever played. It feels alot like counterstrike at first but this game is actually fun. Best part is it actually has a decent interface for selecting weapons and equipment (unlike ghr).

Another cool thing is the addition of weapon modifications. It adds much needed flexibility to the weapons. The movement may seem a little akward at first, but you get used to it pretty quick.

My favorite thing so far is the addition of tear gas. The tear gas effect can't really be described in words, it has to be experienced. Thankfully, they also included a gas mask to your kit items.

They beefed up the flash bangs too. Now, when you get flashbanged your entire vision floods white and slowly fades back in while this ear-pierceing whine fills your headphones.

The only complaints I have are the movement for going between standing, crouching, and prone isn't as quick or sharp as I'd like. America's Army does it better. Also there is still no jumping, another thing AA did right.

It would be interesting to see what qualities Raven Shield has and I agree it's probably gonna take a long time to come out for the MAC.  Wtf, why does it take so damn long anyway.  i mean to be honest it should be the other way around.  Design it for the Mac then make it for the PC (Piece of Crap).  Aaah well, one can wish
