Title: New Computer Advice Post by: Overthrow.aHa! on February 25, 2006, 05:40:24 am The family computer is getting replaced and we're looking to get an iMac G5, does anyone happen to have a suggestion? Should we wait until the next intel ones are released or buy now?
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: Civrock on February 25, 2006, 05:45:15 am There won't be any new Intel-iMacs for a while - go for it.

But iMac G5 is cheap and all now. And would probably be a good replacement to a family computer. Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: Civrock on February 25, 2006, 11:12:21 pm Oh, lol... I overlooked that he wrote "iMac G5". Get one of the new Intel-iMacs of course, preferably the 20" model.
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: BFG on February 25, 2006, 11:13:27 pm Hold on civic, it depends what he needs the mac for. there is no point in going out and buying an intel imac if your going to be using processor intensive apps running rossetta all the time.
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: Civrock on February 25, 2006, 11:25:17 pm 'family computer'... and he wants to get an iMac in the first place... and this is exactly what the new iMacs are for, the new Intel ones are MUCH better for this purpose than the PPC predecessors.

Yes, but it's also a matter of price. Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: BTs_Mysterio on February 26, 2006, 01:45:56 am If price was a big issue they would buy a 17in.
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: Overthrow.aHa! on February 26, 2006, 01:49:37 am okay we just ordered the 20 inch
250 gb hd 2 gb ram 256 mb video card wireless keyboard/mouse woot! :D Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: BTs_Mysterio on February 26, 2006, 01:52:53 am A 20 inch what? G5? Intel? [and why?... to silence future troll-ation]
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: Civrock on February 26, 2006, 01:55:03 am There is no iMac G5 with 256MB VRAM (not even as BTO option), therefore it's the Intel one.
Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: BTs_Mysterio on February 26, 2006, 02:04:56 am Oh, I though the iMac did get a 256 BTO... or was that 64 --> 128? Well, he made the right choice in the end of the day.
Sort of related: Anyone think there will be a 15 inch iMac or 17 inch Cinema Display ever again? it would be nice for a traditionally non-computer area or small desk. Title: Re: New Computer Advice Post by: BFG on February 26, 2006, 11:16:35 am Yeah there was an issue with the grpahics card - (thats the ATI Radeo X1600, very nice) comes as standard with 128MB but apple then added a BTO option for the same card with 256MB VRAM for only a measly $75. The BTO option then disapeard but has come back again!!
Fun and roundabouts with apple, fantastic graphics card to be putting in the imacs though!! |
