Title: Is WoW really worth the money?
Post by: Ein on January 03, 2006, 04:16:21 am
OK, I have to admit that the game deffinately looks interesting. I briefly got into warcraft when Warcraft 1 first came out but since then had not given it a second thought until now. World of Warcraft lets you experience the whole world that Warcraft is set in as either a member of the Horde or the Alliance and is set up as a RPG instead of a strategy game like the previous ones and lets you view the world through either 1st or 3rd person. Whats also nice is that quests are constantly being added or changed making the game never ending.

The game has deffinately peaked my interest until I found out that it also costs $15 for 30 days to play online and there is no offline game mode. As it is, I only play on GR about 2 days out of the week and assuming that there are only four weeks in an average month, that results in me playing for only 8 days a month If I keep with my current gaming schedule. Now with it costing $15 a month (a little under $2 a day if i continue my same schedule), I question... is it really worth the cost?

So, Im asking those who have already purchased the game... how is it? Also is the monthly fee actually a monthly fee or do they deduct hours from your account based on how much you actually play? Meaning if I only play for 8 days out of a month, will I still have to pay again for another 30 days even though I only used 8 of the days I originally payed for?

Thanks for any imput,
Ein

It's a monthly fee, they don't care about how much you actually play. And to be honest... I'd never touch a game where you have to subscribe and pay fees for certain amounts of time, no matter how good it is.

I'd recommend America's Army instead, though. Great game with great graphics, tons of maps for every taste, continuous development for many years to come and a long-term motivation... for free! :)

(some soft- and hardware manufacturers should pay me for the public advertisements I write if I like their products, lol)[/size]

Don't agree with ya... I have the game.. i had the questions as u ein but as soon u got the game u wont care about how much it coasts and trust me u wont only play 2 days a week.. and then ull get the same average as u have with GR Premium and i think u got it no? ok maybe not the same... but at least ull b able to play the best game ever! I think if u like RPGs the only reason why not to buy WoW is that u dont want to get addicted and this addiction will b harder then smoking.. I swear ya its more then worh the money (a little typ to the end: Take Hord, Alliance have no idea how to play as a team and besides of Paladins u can chose every class that exists also in the Alliance)

To go WoW or not to go WoW....Well...If you like your friends, your GF or any other real life things you might think of, then don't go for it. It takes time, and you'll get stuck behind the comp for a long time. It's nothing like AA or any other FPS games. It's totally different. But...if you want to play a great game, which will give you endless of hours of good gameplay, then you should get it.

For me it's the perfect game..and now, 9 months after I got it, I'm slowly, but steadily, granting myself more and more time off the game to go out, see friends and do something else for a while ;)

hehe, i dont believe it brutha ;)

By the way how much does the game cost per month? when you add up the monthly fee what does it come to per year and how does that compare with the number of other games you could go out and buy as 'one off's?

Title: Re: Is WoW really worth the money?
Post by: Brutha on January 03, 2006, 02:49:19 pm
Well, I rather compare it to how many DVD's or videos or something you'd rent in a  month, because I assure you...you won't rent any movies anymore. It's wowwowowowowowow all day long..and nights too. And lets say you buy a new game every second month, right? It will still be cheaper than doing that.

To answer the question: It's $156 for a year of WoW... ::)

Edit: I forgot to add the price of the game itself and the expansion pack(s)... that's not included.

It’s worth the money Ein. The hours you will spend with this game will stop you from spending money on other stuff, so you might actually have more money in your pocket at the end of the month.

Not if he even stops working. ;D And his close-ones and friends will probably not like it either...

I think it is worth the money. WoW is incredibly massive (5 install disks!) with literally millions of ever changing possibilities and millions of people to play with. Unless you are a mega-hardcore gamer, WoW takes just as much time as you want it to. If you want to charge your way to sixty and spend 7 hours in a raid dungeon with 39 other people you can. If you want to work your way slowly to 60 playing only a couple hours a day, you can.

The game is so much more interesting than your normal repetitve FPS. You arent running around the same little space over and over and over. Even if you do come back to a area you've already been in, your relationship to it changes as your lvl and experience does. There are so many more facets to the game than your normal FPS.

i think u can do both.. dont buy it and ull b happy that u didnt buy it. Buy it at ull b more then happy that u bought it all other fact were said already.

Thanks for all your imput. I just bought the game and installed all 5 disks (sheesh). Im currently downloading the patches for it and hope to be playing soon. To offset the cost of the game, I have decided to quit smoking(god willing)... $15 a month far outweighs the $60 a month i was spending on cigarettes and I will be healthier for it (at least physically) in the long run.

Once again, thanks for your imput and let me know what servers you guys play on so we can meet up and you can help me advance my character.

Ein

You won't be able to play for another hour or so. Stupid tuesday matinence. However after that I will probably be online. I play under the name "noripcord" on the Stormrage server. I've got a lvl 43 warrior and a lvl 11 hunter. I can get you an invite to a large guild and I can help yah out if you need it.

I just signed up with a 14-day trial I got and play on a realm called "Alex*********", I can't remember the name, it's weird. My name's Civrock and I'm a level 4 Undead Warrior. lol, so far I'm getting a fuckin' headache from the perspective and the movement... argh! But other than that, the graphics are quite nice and the quests are... lame. I'm in some city called Deathknell right now.

Anybody have a clue why the mouse cursor just disappears sometimes? When I had to dig somebody into a grave... it just disappeared and I couldn't get it back. Then I just ESCed and could hit the exit button by luck. Meh.

I don't know yet if I'll continue playing after the trial... I have a feeling that it's not my type of game. :::-/::

... you had to 'dig' somebody into a grave? Are you sure you havn't been playing stubbs the zombie? ;)

On a unrelated topic of games etc and graphics, any body tried sticking their GhR settings on to max again (i know a lot of folk turned them right down for competing/gaming etc) , but its like a damn whole new game - especially when you look at the new camo outfits in the BL mappack... awsome! :D

You mean I've been playing with everything on Max all this time and it was hurting my gaming?

You can also turn on FSAA and AF with ATi Displays (if you have an ATi graphics card)... Ghost Recon CAN look really damn good, but it can also kill your performance (if you have an older Mac and graphics card) and also decrease how far you can see etc.

I never thought of that, might have a go just for the sake of seeing how badly it kills the comp.

annyhoo, appolgoies for hijacking the thread there...back to WoWbble or whatever it is ;)

I've done all of that and have everything set on Max and I always peg the fastest fps on every map.

Of course, here are my system specs:

PowerMac G5 Tower, Single 1.8GHz Processor
900MHz FSB
ATi Radeon X800XT 256MB Graphics Card
2.5GB RAM

civ i think the trial version is massively diff from the real version.

Why? There are only a few unimportant restrictions.

And... how do you like it so far, Ein? After a 6 hour WoW marathon with Ethion I think the quests are very repetitive... and rather boring. :::-/::

Being a roleplayer, and playing on RP realms..and only RP realms I do think I get something more out of the game than ordinary players...well, it's fun anyways. And yeah, pally's ought to be shot!

Title: Re: Is WoW really worth the money?
Post by: Ein on January 06, 2006, 11:51:37 pm
Well, I like some aspects about it such as druids shapechange abilities and the RP end like Brutha was saying but the quests are sometimes tedious and repetitive. I think the best thing to do is to get a whole bunch of quest started and then your free to roam around, completing quests in the area instead of running back and forth for every single quest.

Also movement is slow but that will probably change when I can transform into a cat or have bought a mount to ride.

Also, I have yet to see someone from the horde... The closest I have gotten to a member of the horde was when a single orc tried to raid one of the towns I was in. I didn't see him but saw messages going crazy from the town defense trying to hunt down the lonely orc. I'm sure that as I travel closer to the battle lines, I will hopefully see more and by that time, I will be high enough level to help in battling them.

Overall view so far is that yes it is addicting only cause it is so timeconsuming to get places however it is not the best nor the worst game I have ever played. I've subscribed for 3 months so far which should be long enough for me to experience most of what the game has to offer.

Horde > Alliance.

Yes the quests are repetative, which is why whenever looking for quests I would take ones that send me in to unexplored areas of the world, so I had something new going on while I was looking around for whatever I needed to do for the quest.  Also, having a friend to go questing with makes it a much more enjoyable thing.  Particularly if your friend is a healer (especially a priest!).

Ein, where have you been exploring, and not finding any Horde?  In addition to the Horde being outnumbered by the Alliance on most of the servers, on my server, the central areas of the eastern continent have almost no horde presence whatsoever, because to survive there you need to be level 45+ (to survive the alliance), but the quests are all for 20-ish characters.

Which realms are you guys in (EU servers excluded, can't access them with my version)? I have a level 8 Undead Warrior on Alexstrasza and a level 8 Dwarf Warrior on Kul'Tiras. Both are called Civrock.

And heh... I play a few hours of WoW during the day and a few hours of AA in the evening (unless I have work that day). Kinda cool, it's a good alternation which makes me want to play more of FPS (AA in particular) because, to be honest, I got a little numb of them, too. :)

Currently, I've only got one character, a 15th level night elf druid. I started out in darnassus and am now exploring the norther end of the western continent. I don't know what server I'm on but will gladly change if I find out where you all are. Perhaps we should all start on the same server playing as hordes (since they are outnumbered and I love being the underdog).

Yeah, sounds great. There was a thread in the General Gossip about a *DAMN or GameRanger guild, whatever... maybe there's enough interest now. Hmm? :) Best would be on one of the new realms, Normal style.

And... I just ordered the game. I got the official strategy guide earlier today, surprisingly, from my GF when she came back from the mall. She saw me playing it so she just got it for me... and it's kinda cool, I must say, and VERY long with TONS of informations... jeez. So I kinda had to get the full game, I'm doomed (while being more motivated to play FPS also, as mentioned before). :P

Oh and... FOR THE HORDE!!! :-X

hah, horde are a bunch of assholes. Even if they do win WSG constantly >.<. Things get more fun with your lvl Ein. Better spells, faster movement, cooler weps and armor. lvl 40 you can get a sweet mount which increases movement speed by 60% and just makes you look cool. I've got a horde char on lonewolfs server along with a lvl 45 human warrior on stormrage. I would be more than happy to help whoever needs it out.

Lvl 60 Orc Hunter on Smolderthorn, + a guild that is just starting to get ourselves in to end-game instances (Zul'Gurub, MC by the beginning of next month, we hope).  Because of this I probably wouldnt be able to have much more than an alt on another server, but if people want to do it, I'll sign on.

Nope, you can't access european servers, if you change the realmlist.wtf you apparently need an european ac count.

Lord Kazzak does Stormwind.  Enjoy.  (Requires WMV to play).

If being able to do things like this is not enough to make WoW worth it, I dont know what is.   :D
