Title: Rosa Parks passes away
Post by: KGB on October 25, 2005, 07:46:32 pm
Rosa Parks, the black woman whose 1955 protest action in Alabama
marked the start of the modern US civil rights movement, has died at the age of 92.

A sad day for the "free world", I salute the lady who's protest
was the start of the Civil Rights Act.
May she rest in peace.

  Sad to hear that one person who caused a movement finally passed.
Quote
"She sat down in order that we all might stand up - and the walls of segregation came down,"
I thought that that was a good quote to put to her.  Rest in Peace Mrs. Parks, you deserve it.

BTW KGB, thanks for putting this up, ironic that a non US person did it.

She lived to the age of 92, I say that's a pretty fucking good life.

The world needs a lot more people like that lady. An amazing determination to stand up (or in her case not stand up!) and fight for what was right. That was quite something.

It is always sad to hear of the death of a great person such as Ms. Parks, and I fully agree with BFG, the world needs more people of this determination and fierce spirit.

In a way that is cool, for Apple to recognize her on their splash page, and honor her as they have.

<rant>
But at the same time when you think about it, it is a fairly unscrupulous thing to do since the only reason they put that up there is because they thought it might increase their sales just a bit.  I think that if a company truly wants to honor somebody or some group of people, they should do so without ever acknowledging that it was their company that produced the advertisement.  Perhaps I am coming down too hard on Apple for doing this, but using the life of one person as a way to boost your sales seems a bit low to me.

Keep in mind I am not singling out Apple here, in particular there was an Anheauser Busch (I cant spell today) commercial that went on during the last superbowl, that showed a bunch of american soldiers walking through an airport and being applauded by the crowd as they walked by, then it faded out and said "Thank you" (link) http://www.ifilm.com/superbowl  Then fading out to the company logo.

It should have instead read "Thank you ... for  going overseas and fighting and dying, so that we could exploit you and use your pain and suffering as a way to pull at America's heartstrings and get them to buy our beer."

No matter what company had done this, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Halliburton, whatever, I would have had this same reaction to the add.  The real reason being, I find it very angering to think of some marketing exec reading the news of Ms. Parks' death, and instead of feeling much in the way of sorrow for her passing, instead having a lightbulb click on over his head and then scampering off to the board room to suggest his new marketing pitch.  Using other people's death, when it is in no way related to your company, such as the Apple add or the Anheauser Busch add, is utterly reprehensible and very lacking in taste.
</rant>

Anyway, totally off-topic post for the most part, sorry about that.  If you guys want to tell me that I am a stupid heartless bastard and that i should die, and at the same time discuss the scruples (or lack thereof) of the advertising industry, let me know and I will make a new thread for it and move my post in there.
